Help with French Lavender

Can anyone help with my French Lavender please?
I left it out during winter thinking it was hardy… but it’s not looking too good.

Should I give it a good trim?

Or is it dead? 🙁

Any help gladly received.

French lavender isn’t that robust; many of us have lost plants this winter (killer combination of cold and wet) so I suspect yours has gone to the great compost heap in the sky. If you cut a stem right back to the roots is there any green or does it all look dead?

DifficultBloodyWoman · 08/04/2023 09:13

Lavender doesn’t get new growth from the woody parts of the plant so don’t cut it right back. Mine have done well with seaweed fertiliser so you may want to try that.

Thank you both.
I will investigate further this afternoon!

Try English lavender. It is okay in our winters.

I have up with repeated attempts with French Lavender the UK and have been much more successful with English Lavender.. Just a hint in case you decide to replace ☺️

twolilacs · 09/04/2023 15:41

Garden centres love to sell French lavender and other less hardy stuff precisely because it isn't very hardy. They like the repeat business when you go back time and again to replace dead plants with something else.

@jacksnowdon many thanks for such a detailed post!
I will report back after further investigation.

@twolilacs
that’s interesting!
I love the look of French Lavender more than English lavender, such gorgeous dark purple flowers. Didn’t realise it was not particularly hardy!

Mine died this winter after a few good years, so I feel your pain.
