What sort of common lilac (Syringa Vulgaris) is this?

I thought it would be easy enough to buy a 'common lilac' but of course there are all sorts of types, they're not all the same. I went to a nearby garden centre having been told they had them in stock but the individual types they had weren't quite the right flower for me.

The one I'm after is a lilac colour for sure, but none of the flowers seem to match the one in the picture, to replace the one we used to have. It's not a 'Sensation' - the colours are more stark on that one, this is a nice feather duster feel.

This website gives some info on it but doesn't seem to mention all the different varieties.

Can anyone help?

That’s got the right colour, but it has single flowers and OP’s pic has double flowers.

Scentara Double Blue?

Surprising to see this old thread up! I did buy three lilacs from the local garden centre, they were about £25-£30 each and didn't bloom first time round but seem to be coming through this years, so fingers crossed.

One was the white 'limonen' one (sp?) and the others, well, I can look it up but they were that kind of pinky colour. They were barely knee high when I got them, and have taken a while to grow, not up to my waist yet. They will take a while to be actual 'lilac trees' - maybe a few years, and I thought they might have died over the winter, as they seemed very inactive. However, some buds are coming through, so will see how it goes.

I did go all round the houses trying to find the right one, however.

Yes it’s difficult to find the tough old varieties. I have a lwhite lilac -it’s mixed in with a laurel hedge and though v tough has few flowers - I should prob move a bit to a better spot to see if it flowers better but would prefer a lilac coloured flower.

Incidentally, while this thread got reopened, I saw a nice lilac - Michel Bugnal I think it's called - at my local market. I did decide against that one, but it was maybe shoulder high and only £25 - annoying because as I said I bought a couple from my local garden centre a year ago and they are not even waist high still, I should have got a head start on it by buying a large one, it's gonna take ages to become close to the real deal.
