Alternatives to sweet peas

I have two large troughs positioned under some trellis on an outbuilding wall. For the past few years I've grown sweet peas there but have never been particularly happy with them. There only seems to be a brief period where they look good before the bottom parts start to go brown. It may be that the troughs, while deep, aren't deep enough for sweet peas.

So I'm looking for an alternative, fast growing, climbing annual. Any suggestions?

Nasturtiums?

You could try everlasting sweet peas instead?

I'm planting some dwarf sweet peas underneath my usual ones this year in the hope it will solve the problem. Yet to find a climber that doesn't look thin at the bottom after a while.

How about Morning Glory? Ipomoea purpurea, especially “Grandpa Ott” which is a really deep blue. You can sow in situ once frosts have passed, and they grow quite quickly, and flower from about July until first frosts.

Some great suggestions - thank you! I didn't know you could get dwarf sweet peas so I might give the climbers another go and underplant with a dwarf variety.

Tempted by morning glory too - might give them a go in another location.

I prefer blues and pinks so probably not nasturtium - though I do like them in my bean beds.

Star jasmine? Or a thornless blackberry?

Hang on you said annual, sorry never mind me

Thunbergia? I grew some in a pot last year and they lasted well into autumn and looked great with my pot dahlias.

I find morning glory only flower right at the top of the vine... I have a pot in my border I grow them in every year, but I can only see the flowers from the bedroom window 😂

There's a variety of nasturtium called 'salmon baby' which is pink.
