Help me plan 2 new beds

Been in my new house for 2 summers and yet to do anything with the garden. It is 2 level, the lower level is a patio with sofas and table and chairs. The upper level has a single trim of lavender and a couple of walnut trees. To the south there is a woodland so there is considerable shade (and a lot of leaves in autumn) in half the garden.

I have made up 2 small beds, 50 x 150 cm that I having fun planning what to go in them. I am putting in a steel obelisk with a small rambling rose climbing up it, so I don’t want too much else with height.

I’ve included a diagram and the rose I have chosen.

What else shall I put in here?

If it's shady, perhaps go for a woodland-y vibe? Cyclamen, anemone nemorosa? Or maybe hellebores or small spurges - you can get lovely lime green flowers that would set off that rambler a treat. Or vinca minor (though see the other recent thread about it!) is nice ground cover and the white or pale blue would be nice with your rose.

Evergreen/long flowering/colourful/interesting foliage are the things I look for when planting but having something in flower as much of the year as possible is the bigger aim.

Evergreens that fit this bill for my garden:
Erysimum Bowes Mauve
Phlomis Italica
Euphorbia Silver Edge (but I also like Rubra although the flowers introduce a yellow tinge)
Carex (lots of varieties but Evergold is my favourite although Everest would work better with a pink based scheme)
Bergenia - various varieties but Claire Maxine has great red leaves over winter
Pittosporum
Stachys Lanata
Parahebe Snow Clouds
Hebe
Dianthus Mrs Sinkins
Sage
Nepeta

But the deciduous plants I'd add in:
Agapanthus
Persicaria Superba
Persicaria Alba
Lysimachia Clethroides
Echinacea
Agapanthus Verbena
Verbena Bonariensis
Verbena Officinalis Bampton
Thalyctrum
Geranium Rozanne, Brookside or
Azure Rush

And bulbs
Whatever spring bulbs you like plus
Alliums
Triteleia Queen Fabiola
Galtonia
Colchicum

Good luck with the gardening 🌿🌸

Some really interesting plants suggested by previous poster. Probably a lot more than you can fit in but I've nicked some of those suggestions!

As the beds are quite small, and the fact that the design is symmetrical but the conditions are not, I would look to stick to a strict, limited colour scheme. The erysiym Bowles mauve being evergreen and not too high is a good suggestion. So you could pick a few other pale pinks and purple flowing plants along with a small, round shrub such as pittosporum (golf ball maybe or tomb thumb) for the centre, or buxux which is happy in sun or shade, so you've got a some permanent structure. Then a compact grass to surround it with along with the other mauve / pink / perhaps silver leaved plants suited to the differing conditions on either side.

Let me know if you'd like me to do more of a formal design for you - I'm trying build up a portfolio of small garden design projects.

Off to Google I happily go. I’m in no rush so will probably fill with annuals and add maybe 1 or 2 feature plants a year.

Thank you all.
