The bane of my life in the garden now

Sycamore seedlings. Thousands of them!

I’ve only tackled the ones in the flowerbeds but I’ve pulled out loads, and then I go back the next day and there are more, and more, and more. They are quite easy to pull out when it’s just the seed leaves but once they develop the first proper leaf, they get such a hold, and I’m doing it by hand as I want to see which of my lovely plants has self seeded (as I cannot grow anything from seed myself it would seem). I’m concerned that the ones in the lawn will get a good hold before it’s dry enough to cut the grass and then I’ll have a forest 🥴

Does anyone else have a plant they despise as much as I do sycamores?

Sycamores are spawn of the devil, I agree. We have an oak tree and oak seedlings are bad, but nowhere near as numerous as sycamores.

NewNameForXmas · 30/03/2023 18:39

Maple is the same! Suddenly they're 3 ft high and you have to dig them out.

larkstar · 30/03/2023 19:12

"Honesty" - my wife doesn't mind it but it's seeded all over the garden - every day for several weeks now I pull 20-30 newly sprouted seedlings out - I hate the stuff.

Vine weevils, had them for a few years now and got on top of them with Nematodes. Thought we were sorted but no we ended up with sciarid fly, nastly little blighters so we had to buy nematodes for those too.

Restinggoddess · 30/03/2023 19:23

Wild garlic - everywhere
When I mention it to friends that suggest recipes!!!

wonkylegs · 30/03/2023 19:31

I can cope the the sycamore seedlings even though there are bloody hundreds of them
It's the ground elder and the bamboo that is the bane of my garden both send shoots out everywhere.
Our bamboo is a huge thing planted by the previous owners and despite aggressive management by us it's about 8m in diameter (the kids hide in 'the forest') and is now impossible to dig out (we've even tried it with a mini digger)
The ground elder is so invasive and grows so fast once it warms up.

RunningFromInsanity · 30/03/2023 19:40

This is the first year I’ve had sycamore seedlings and they had completely taken over my lawn and pots. Insane.
luckily I managed to mow my lawn at the weekend so I’m really hoping that’s killed them.

Never seen it before, my poor lawn!

Muststopeating · 30/03/2023 19:46

We sprouted mares fail last year... In 3 separate places. I suspect that is about to be the main of my life.

I also have self seeded trees bloody everywhere but I think they are birch.

Wish I had some honesty to spread though, so jealous of PP (I think I may have one seedling this year so fingers crossed next year it might start causing me problems).

omnishambles · 30/03/2023 19:50

I don't mind the sycamores, I even enjoy it as they are so easy to pull out. No lawn though.
Herb Robert is my nemesis.

maximist · 30/03/2023 19:54

I knew this would be about sycamore seedlings! My garden is surrounded by the trees, and I spent most of the autumn and early spring picking the helicopter seeds out of my flower beds and pots, now I'm picking out the ones I missed which are growing. It's the worst year for them since I moved here seven years ago, they're driving me mad.

I love honesty. I tried to take some seeds from some I saw growing wild but they didn't take.

Hedjwitch · 30/03/2023 20:13

Herb Robert is a menace. In summer you cant get up or down my mothers garden path for the bloody stuff.

Aquilegia pops up everywhere but its quite pretty so I dont mind it.

Periwinkle also spreads like crazy but thats why i planted it for ground cover.

AmniMajus · 30/03/2023 20:14

I watched the squirrels scour devour the sycamore seeds all winter long and yet here we are with 20 million sycamore seedlings come spring. Nettles are my nemesis, I pull them up, they come back. I think an acre of our garden is basically nettles.

Stormyforcast · 30/03/2023 20:16

I'm so glad someone said this.
First year in a garden and sycamore seeds are the bane of my life.
Need to mow at the weekend but they've got behind the shed, which means I need to squeeze in behind it and pick them out.

I hate them.
I had no idea they were so annoying

Starseeed · 30/03/2023 20:16

Elder. The alley behind my garden is full of it. I managed to get rid of one big bush by cutting it down to a tiny stump, cutting all leaves off and covering it with a black bag for a season - that one hasn’t come back for a couple of years now but there are others I need to tackle!

I love Honesty, I have finally managed to get some to grow, so you are making me feel hopeful that it will seed everywhere!

BestIsWest · 30/03/2023 20:25

It’s brambles for me. I detest them. I keep a beady eye on our own garden but I can see a patch over the wall on my neighbour’s side. I’m dying to offer to go over and clear them but he’s 91 and very proud and would attempt to do them himself.
Mum used to have mares tails. Horrid things.

Catname · 30/03/2023 20:26

As gardeners, we all have our crosses to bear.

Once sycamore seedling season is over, I’ll be continuing the battle against brambles and, I’m afraid to say that I had to move to get rid of my mares tail Muststopeating.

My battle is both Bindweed and Brambles . They drive me mad.

MandyMotherOfBrian · 30/03/2023 20:36

I’d take any of these over bloody Cuckoo Pint - everywhere!

TheIsleOfTheLost · 30/03/2023 20:45

Bloody sycamores! Worst year ever. I have bind weed, brambles and herb Robert too, but sycamores are the worst just now. You pull up a thousand and a thousand more rise up to take their place. Next door has mares tail, so it's only a matter of time before that joy arrives.

Oh me too. I love it but every year it gets closer to my flower beds (currently in the wild woody area). This year I tried smothering it with weed membrane then mulchy soil on top - apparently after a couple of years the bulbs give up and die. it was strong membrane and in a few places the garlic has actually managed to pierce through the stuff.

CatherinedeBourgh · 30/03/2023 20:58

That's interesting. I have a new garden with a large sycamore in it but I've only seen one seedling (which I was planning to leave to become a new tree). Are there different kinds of sycamore which don't seed as much?

Choconut · 30/03/2023 21:07

I have many of these......plus Docks. Oh and cow parsley is currently coming up with avengance. Hate, hate, hate how both spread way too fast.

Blogdog · 30/03/2023 21:30

Vinca. I rue the day someone suggested planting it. I am constantly pulling it out. It’s even in the lawn now.
