Greenhouses

Hi,

I'm looking at investing in a greenhouse. Would anyone have a make they could recommend, there are quite a few out there but none local to us. I would like a nice looking one if possible, open to wood or aluminium frame and open to ideas about what is the best glazing to have.

Thanks in advance

Rhino greenhouse’s are fab but not cheap. Come in a number of different colours too.

VeronicaBeccabunga · 29/03/2023 15:06

We got mine from the Greenhouse People. We happened to be really lucky and got a good discount on one that had been put up for a gardening show and then taken down again.
They were really helpful via their phone line when we had slight issues getting the glazing in when we built it here.

Please, please invest in safety glass. I am scarred and have ongoing problems following a grim accident many, many years back with greenhouse glass.

We have a swallow one, really impressed with it

SinisterKnitter · 29/03/2023 15:14

Mine is a Rhino, it really is lovely and very solid

Sarvanga38 · 29/03/2023 15:16

Another Rhino here - pretty colour and very well made.

We used the Greenhouse People and bought a 14 x 8 ft greenhouse. We used their approved installer and he did all the ground work and erected it when it arrived. Brilliant service from the company and the fitter. It is a beautiful greenhouse

Thanks everyone!

Well I was hoping for under £1000 to be honest. I was looking online at some of the cheaper wooden ones with the styrene glazing but they had quite mixed reviews about how flimsy they are.

I had also looked at Halls - our local garden centre did have these but I wasn't overly impressed when I saw them in person.

I will look into all the ones you have suggested.

Thanks again

My 32 year old Robinsons is still going strong. It wasn’t cheap, though.

backinthestoneage · 29/03/2023 23:04

My Rhino is on order - so excited

Hawkins003 · 29/03/2023 23:11

I guess with the correct wood and glass you could build your own custom designed one, they are fairly easy to plan and build. Just the time and cost of materials ect.

Poodlepompom · 30/03/2023 06:07

Does anyone have a Vitavia Greenhouse?

All the ones suggested are beautiful especially the Rhino ones but I'm fairly new to gardening so I'm just a little unsure how much I really want to spend.

Once you start using your greenhouse you will spend hours in there. I used mine all year round - my greenhouse overwinters more delicate pots and I grow winter salad crops.

I am only getting a new one as we have moved house and the buyer 'paid extra' for us to leave the old one at the last house. Hence I am going for an upgrade and a larger one.

NanTheWiser · 30/03/2023 12:07

Like Mere, I also have two Robinsons, nearly 30 years old. Always pay for quality, and as large as you can afford, even though they are expensive. I believe the Rhinos are very good (not available years ago).

Poodlepompom · 30/03/2023 13:00

Thank you - maybe I just need to save for a little while longer.

I had a Rhino one in previous garden, it was excellent.

You can frequently get second hand ones minimal cost or free. You have to dismante and transport. A good handyman would put it back together if you don't fancy giving it a try.

Honestly you can get a decent greenhouse for a grand. Just go for it. You don’t need to spend thousands.

I think thr issue is you said you wished to invest in a green house, and of course it’s a huge amount of money whichever way you look at it, but most folks think of a greenhouse when it’s an investment as something much more high end than the standard.

thats fairly standard from b&q, you can go cheaper or more expensive, then. If you’re not handyget a local builder in to build it for you.

@Mypatioisminging yes that's a good point...for me £1000 is a lot of money for a green house but understand you can actually spend so much more.

I know I need toughened glass because we have young children still.

Mines a 6x6 ft Elite green powder coated greenhouse. Cost me around £600 about 10 years ago. My Dad fitted it for me so no erection costs
Definitely get safety glass

Moveforward · 30/03/2023 16:19

We have an 8 x 8 rhino

We.used the refund on our COVID cancelled holiday to pay for it, so luckily has the money

Is recommend it

Exactly it’s a lot of money which ever wat you look at it. If you’d written I want a greenhouse, fully erected, safety glass, for under a grand what’s the recommendations, the answers would be very different.

but the I want to invest in a greenhouse I think threw the thread.

LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 30/03/2023 16:55

How about keeping your eye out for a second hand one? They come up on local Facebook pages fairly regularly. Get power to it if you can, makes a world of difference

Poodlepompom · 30/03/2023 16:59

Thanks, yes I have been looking at second hand but there doesnt seem to be many around where I am..I will keep an eye out though.

A friend of mine got a lovely wooden one for a very good price end of line from a local garden centre, so it’s worth asking round.

Chewbecca · 30/03/2023 17:46

Ours is a budget Palram green one with plastic, not glass.

It does the job but is quite flimsy, the panes can blow out on a really windy day.

We built it ourselves, took a whole weekend but was very satisfying!
