Can I do this to some wisteria?

Next door grows wisteria against a south-facing fence. The tendrils reach over the fence and into my garden. Would I be successful in growing it against a trellis/ wire on my side of the fence? It would be completely north facing and in perpetual shade, but of course the main plant would be in full sun.
If successful it would brighten up quite a boring few fence panels.

Give it a try - i love wisteria!

I'd give it a go, the leaves are attractive even if you don't get flowers. Be patient though, as they do take a while to flower on new stems.

It’ll concentrate its main attention on the bits of it that are in yhe sun

My wisteria grows on a north facing wall- I know they’re meant to prefer full sun but mine seems incredibly happy.

You can absokutely - but be prepared for your neighbour to chop it back unless they know you are doing this and which branches you’re training.

I think you need to ask them. As they may chop it back. I did it with my neighbours and she came out one day and hacked it. I don’t think she realised. So best to have a word.

Thanks all. At least in the short term, I’m not too worried about them cutting it back - it’s been rented and they aren’t too proactive with the garden. The certainly won’t be removing the plant anyway.

Mine's on a north westerly wall and does well (or at least it did until the puppy thought it was a stick and chewed it in half).
