Hello haven’t grown peas
before but have cleared an area that would get full sun and I think I want to grow peas

dhould I grow sugarsnap or standard garden peas? What is the easiest/successful and should I grow nasturtiums all round to protect

Grow whatever you love to eat. Mice like to nibble the new plants so try to grow them inside to start with. No need for other protection.

Thank you I’m either daydreaming about popping fresh peas to nibble in the garden or snap peas for cooking but going to get going!

I love fresh peas but you do end up throwing out all the pods (although they go in the compost, so not entirely wasted). This year I'm growing a mange-tout variety called Oregon Sugar Pod, which sounds pretty good!

Its also nice to have a little tray of peas growing on the window sill if you have space. You can snip off the shoots to add to salads, and they just keep growing.

I'm also growing Oregon Sugar Pod for outside.

Inside I use cheap dried peas, sown thickly, to get pea sprouts for salads. It's much cheaper than buying pea seeds.

There's a gorgeous mangetout pea called 'shiraz,' which is dark purple - I really recommend that. Tasty, easy to see so you don't miss picking them before they get too big, and children love them. They are quite nice raw; if you cook them they turn green, but stain the cooking water a fantastic bright teal colour.

I didn't know nasturtiums protected peas. I'd be a bit worried they might just function as a delivery mechanism for slugs and snails. I find that spiky foliage (eg. offcuts of berberis) is the best defence.

Sugar snap have the advantage that you can eat the pod even if it’s only got a couple of peas inside. And unlike mangetout, you can pick them when the peas have developed to eating size, so you can still eat raw peas, even if you don’t get the satisfying pop.

Ive grown them, they are very productive. My favourite is Carouby de Maussanne though, they taste delicious .They make a very good risotto.

How about a nice peapod Bergundy in the style of Tom Good?

Love the name! I've made a note for next year.
