Any hope for this?

This lovely big shrub has sadly been affected by the snow (can't remember what it is - we only moved here last summer!) I think where the snow sat on it for so long it's practically killed it. It does have some green shoots to the left but really quite dead looking on the right. It's about 7-8 foot tall so I'm loath to just hoik it out.
Does anyone think it's revivable? And if so should I cut it back or just see if a bit more growth comes through the middle/right hand side?

Any hope for this?

Is it a buddlia? Purple long flowers in the summer? If so just cut it down to 6” - yup, 15 cm - right down to the ground. It will be back to big within no time at all. It will flower really well too.

Oooo really?! I'm on the hunt for the estate agent photos to check more accurately what it is.
But that's fantastic news if i can hack it back, is now the right time of year?

It looks like a Hebe, they seem to have really suffered this year and don’t tend to come back reliably well from a hard prune! Always worth a try though, I’d wait until late spring but I’m probably too cautious….. maybe try it in half or a third? Cut just above buds with green growth if there is any and cut out any dead stems! Or just take it out and start again!!

Ok, I think I'll give it a good month and see if any more growth comes, then might prune back slightly. If we have to replace it I probably won't until next year anyway... the back garden needs a good sort out and I would want to replace with something sizeable as if offers quite good privacy, and we left the money tree at the old house Grin

Agree with this - it does look like a hebe and they have had a difficult winter.

Well I'm back a month on having left it to itself while making a decision on what to do.
Was about to start a bit of weeding and noticed a few green shoots near the bottom....plus some half way up the left hand side.
Could this be the start of a miraculous recovery?
Still thinking I'll leave it another few weeks and then might give it a hack back....
Hoping it won't then keel over in shock!

You could prune out any definitely dead bits- just scrape a tiny bit of bark off and look at the colour underneath. If it's brown, it's dead. Green is definitely alive and white could go either way.
That way you can tidy up the ugly dead bits without risking any potential new growth.

@BigglyBee thanks for the advice, will do that this weekend
