I thought it would be a nice idea to share what we've been up to in our gardens.

Today I planted potatoes in buckets (with drainage holes drilled into them.) Six buckets in total, three second earlies and three main crops. I have fond memories of digging up potatoes with my dad when I was a child.... I still get excited rummaging around in the buckets when my potatoes are ready!

I also made up a herb planter from an old plant pot that had been hiding behind the shed. Mint, parsley and thyme planted in that so I'll see how that does.

I fed my pot plants with blood, fish and bone and gave them a water.

What have you been up to?

Nothing. Made seven sponge cakes and a cherry cake. We've got the Garden Open for Charity thing tomorrow. One of the local volunteers used to be superintendent of Wisley and before that was the Queen Mother's head gardener. I always feel he's casting a jaundiced eye. I want to say 'Look. I know exactly what doesn't work and what I should do better.' I'm pretty satisfied on the whole though. It would have been better if I'd opened last Sunday - things have just tipped over slightly, but it does look lovely. Feel proud. Hope we get a good turnout.

Doing a bit of remodelling and gathering rocks from the hidden undergrowth, we came across Mrs Tiggywinkle having a nap. I’m so happy the shy creature is living in my garden.

Ah, that's lovely. I discovered a hedgehog in my garden a few years back but it hasn't made a return visit.

Sat out with fire in fire pit,and red wine. The others have gone. Just me,the embers, the gurgling of the pond and the sound of the blackbird singing. Bliss.

That sounds heavenly.

Sounds lovely almost the same and enjoy listening to audible while watering the garden…no bird feeders as I have a murder kitty 😞

I've two kitties and one of them is very adept at catching birds, so I avoid anything that might attract birds to the garden. But when the cats are off on their daily constitutional and aren't lurking around the back garden, some birds usually pay me a visit and I love their company and their birdsong.

Someone (sorry I can’t remember who) had asked for a picture of our Polycrub when finished.

we finished it (just about) at the weekend. The lemon tree has been out there for two days and the lemons are starting to ripen (one is now bright yellow, pics a couple of days old).

still need to put the raised beds inside but structure done!

Oh well done. It's a good size too.

I’m very jealous of the golden eagle! Best I could muster today was a wren. The opposite end of the scale from the eagle - so much noise from such a tiny bird.

Had a trip to the garden centre and came away with some nemesia and a lovely new rose (A whiter shade of pale) and some bark.

DH came back from Asda with a tiny acer - he’s really good with them and this looked like one he hadn't seen before. At least I don’t have to worry about where to put it unlike the five foot damson tree that turned up last week that he had no recollection of ordering.

Oh dear Grin

AlwaysAlba I’m doing a lot of staring at my peonies too at the moment. Here are my Callie’s Memory and Sonoma Sun.

They're fab. My Dad has a lovely peony rose (Mam always raved about it when she was still alive) so I'm determined to plant one in my garden.

Drunk beer,so far

That's also a good use of your garden.

VenusClapTrap · 28/05/2023 06:41

Hope your open garden goes well today @Bideshi! Two weeks to go till mine. I am so not ready.

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 28/05/2023 10:20

Best of luck, Bideshi (and you too, VenusClapTrap) although I’m sure neither of you will need it!

Zebracat · 28/05/2023 14:36

Watered my pots. Feeling a bit overwhelmed and disheartened at the moment, somethings eating my seedlings., and everything in the vegetable patch looks a mess.Think I need to choose 1 job and do it.

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 28/05/2023 16:54

Potted on some seedlings which I’m more and more convinced aren’t what they claim to be. Finished (I hope) planting my pots. Squirted the dahlias and cannas with the home-made garlic brew. Fingers crossed!

BestIsWest · 28/05/2023 17:39

One dahlia and a delphinium looks to have been munched despite the evil garlic brew. I still have 3/4 plus my canna Lily has a shoot! I thought it hadn’t survived the winter.
Spread some bark around to mulch the acers and roses. We are still waiting with baited breath to see if the bare root roses DH bought at a fair will produce any shoots.

BiddyPop · 28/05/2023 18:24

Today:
I bought 2 bags of compost (thought I was overdoing it, turns out I had really underestimated!), pea/bean netting and an extra pot.
I sowed courgettes and patty pan squashes, dwarf and climbing beans, radishes, beetroot, and May yet throw in some Swiss chard.
Harvested rhubarb.

Yet to do (but will)
Potted on 3 tomatoes, a pepper and 2 chillis.
Weeded front border.
Planted out last flowering bulbs.
Watered everything.

Then sit with G&T before sun sets 🤞🤞🤞🍸🍸

We need photos of these mystery seedlings!

I've been a bit lax as it's been so hot these last few days...but we had a storm earlier and I've just finished planting the first batch of kidney beans. About 200 of them. Another 200 of a different variety I'll be beaking a start on in a minute.

Our guests bought me a red hibiscus so will also be potting that on maybe this evening. It's a bit buggy after the rain so might have to abandon it.

Yamadori · 28/05/2023 19:01

Today I've been over to see a friend's garden. We did a swap - I took a plant and came away with some compost. It is so nice to see what other people are doing with their garden.

MereDintofPandiculation · 28/05/2023 20:42

I weeded the main gravel path in the “vegetable garden” (now operating solely as an orchard). So difficult! The violets are OK -they’ve finished flowering. But the alpine strawberries are in flower, soon be fruiting.how could I pull them up?

MidlifeWhatNow · 28/05/2023 21:22

Drove out to a village near me to see their open gardens. Got some lovely ideas and was very happy to see a lot of wild areas - was expecting manicured lawns everywhere!

Then headed over to the local garden show. Bought some geums (Scarlet Tempest) and another large pot. Potted up the geums when I got home and bunged a sad-looking saponaria into my 'random stuff' bed to see what happens.

Sat in the deckchair and pondered whether or not I can actually build a rockery in the unloved back corner of the yard. It feels a bit overwhelming tbh.

VenusClapTrap · 28/05/2023 23:06

Thank you Maud! I should have spent the day gardening, but instead took dd to visit Sissinghurst. I haven’t been for years; it was lovely. I bought some oriental poppies and dd blew some pocket money on miniature things for her alpine troughs.

When we got home she was obviously still feeling inspired because she offered to help me in the garden, so I showed her how to Chelsea chop the Sedums. Just her sort of job. She started weeding on impulse too - brilliant. Mind you, she should have been doing exam revision, so…

LostAtTheCrossRoad · 28/05/2023 23:20

Drank a cup of coffee in my new favourite mug in the sunshine. Absolutely nothing else. Will water containers first thing tmrw then maybe do a bit more weeding after work.

BiddyPop · 29/05/2023 10:08

I managed the top half of my "yet to do" list but didn't get to front garden nor the G&T.

Maybe tonight...

I put on my job list only the most urgent jobs. At the moment I’m in the happy position of nothing looking desperately urgent. But if I added to my list all the things that should be done, I’d be feeling like you

Tree thing...

Phygelia I think 🤔

Zebracat · 29/05/2023 11:29

@MereDintofPandiculation thank you. I resisted making a list! Yesterday I bought sad plants at Homebase,so that’s mor3 work. Today I popped the other tomatoes into their places in the greenhouse, and mulched with comfrey leaves, then sowed another row of beetroot. Going out now but later I will sow some lettuce. Feels much more manageable to think of 1 thing at a time. There is no way I would weed alpine strawberries!

BestIsWest · 29/05/2023 11:29

Our garden is tiny (45 x 25 feet) and includes 2 sheds and a patio in that so I’ve run out of things to do at the moment which is annoying me as the weather is so nice and I want to be doing something. I am contemplating a couple of new borders - there isn't one on the left hand side.
I’m trying to decide if I want a greenhouse. We have the base of an old one which I use for sticking random stuff and rhubarb in so there is a place for it. I can’t decide if I want one or not.
