I thought it would be a nice idea to share what we've been up to in our gardens.

Today I planted potatoes in buckets (with drainage holes drilled into them.) Six buckets in total, three second earlies and three main crops. I have fond memories of digging up potatoes with my dad when I was a child.... I still get excited rummaging around in the buckets when my potatoes are ready!

I also made up a herb planter from an old plant pot that had been hiding behind the shed. Mint, parsley and thyme planted in that so I'll see how that does.

I fed my pot plants with blood, fish and bone and gave them a water.

What have you been up to?

It's a big one Smile. The wall is big and bare and there's an old tree it can tangle its way up too. I'll report back at the end of the summer to say whether it's been too much of a thug!

I had one…..it’s an utter thug AND I came up in a horrible itchy rash every time I touched it.
Beware!

orangeflags · 20/04/2023 18:52

Do you think I should plant it in a big tub instead??

I honestly don’t know; mine was flippin’ rampant. Beautiful colour but not worth the hideous, blistering itches and wheals that I got.

I spent an hour getting a border narrowed and reshaped, DH cleared and forked over another bit - he got rid of two huge ferns, a manky, very thorny, half-dead rose and clumps of violets that seed themselves everywhere.
Bit by bit I’m getting there!

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 20/04/2023 19:40

Cut the Forsythia back. It's finally finished flowering.

Imicola · 20/04/2023 20:56

I filled up my daughter's watering can and let her decide what to water!

APurpleSquirrel · 20/04/2023 23:00

Lol @QueenSmartypants I wish I could report them too! Several are being absolute PITAs. I repotted it instead after having to douse it in Resolva for spidermite which seem to keep coming back. Hoping the repotting & treatment will sort it out.

@TroysMammy will post a pic of polycrub once installed - we live in a windy spot so this should last a lot longer than a standard polytunnel

Imicola · 21/04/2023 14:31

Put a load of stoney and lumpy clay soil through a riddell then leveled out a large patch to prepare as lawn. Sowed grass seed. Planted a few brunnera, a foxglove and moved a sweet box, aquilegia and some astilbe from the front into a reclaimed border at the back. I'm of to get my hair done now as reward!

BestIsWest · 21/04/2023 15:07

More border digging and weeding. I’ve planted a few rockery plants. We’ve got a north facing wall with some small apple trees and a maple under planted with narcissi. I can’t get in under the trees to weed and once the narcissi are over it looks a bit dull so I think I’ll order some native wildflower seeds for shade and just chuck them in there.

Decafflatteplease · 21/04/2023 15:14

What a lovely thread! I've made up some hanging baskets for the front, my toddler has been drowning watering the strawberries and playing mud kitchen. We also topped up the bird feeders we've gone through 5kg of bird seed in 3 weeks need to order more!

Well deserved tea and reading books under a duvet on the couch now waiting for everyone to get home 😊

AlisonDonut · 21/04/2023 15:35

I've been ill for a week so am slowly getting back to normal. Yesterday I collected all the seedling pots where the seedlings died whilst I was off ill, this morning I tipped the compost out and washed the pots and this afternoon I'm seperating the next batches of seedlings into the pots to grow on. I'm also preparing tomatoes for next weekend's plant swap if it goes ahead.

Popetthetreehugger · 21/04/2023 15:40

Doesn’t look like my tomatoes have taken 🥺 but Iv put my cosmos seedlings in pots as they we’re looking very sad in trays in the potting shed . Planted chilli seeds and some flower seeds that came in my advent calendar. Raked shingle outside said potting shed and stood looking at the bark to put in beds … but that can be tomorrows job 🤞🤣

orangeflags · 21/04/2023 15:58

We put bark down. Thought 6 bags would do it easily. But as per every year it actually needed 12 bags. Always underestimate this one

AlwaysAlba · 21/04/2023 16:41

Weeded and de-mossed the front path then planted creeping thyme along it. Discovered hose had a major leak, new one coming early next week so have had to watering can entire front garden (leaving back), now laying on bed bemoaning my aching back.

Yellowdays · 21/04/2023 23:15

Admired my beautiful, gorgeous, fragrant viburnum carlesii. Chanel no 5, eat your heart out.

APurpleSquirrel · 22/04/2023 17:33

Bought two Pulmonaria from FB earlier in the week.
Tomorrow we're off to The Eden Project for the day & am soooo looking forward to being able to actually buy some plants this time. Last two times I've been we've been on holiday in Cornwall & the car was too rammed with stuff there was no way to get any plants safely home too.

Gufo · 22/04/2023 18:41

De-mossed the patio, cleared out the shed, and planted some scented night stock. Tomorrow is deadheading tulips and weeding!

214 · 22/04/2023 18:59

Spent an hour or so removing self-heal from flower beds in the front garden, it's a shame as it really is pretty and I like it in the lawn but it is a thug and crowds everything else out. I've yet to harvest any of it for edible / medicinal purposes which is probably what I should have done with today's gatherings - still there will be more there in another week or so!

Imicola · 22/04/2023 19:04

Cleaned the sludge from the sand and water table (i think we will just stick to water this year), and tried to clean the fungus off the mud kitchen without taking all the paint with it!

Hedjwitch · 22/04/2023 20:20

Sowed Cosmos
Removed weed from.the pond
Planted out corncockles and cornflowers
Did some weeding.
Picked masses of dandelions to make tea and "honey"
Sowed a bee mix of wildflowers

LexMitior · 22/04/2023 20:21

Planted raspberries, fed the camellias and azaleas, weeded, planted peonies.

WobblyLondoner · 22/04/2023 20:33

Weeded (a lot), washed epic amounts of pigeon poo off the paving, rearranged my pots (favourite task ever), ordered some edging strip to go round the border, potted up some houseplant cuttings that had been rooting in water.

Love a day of plant pottering :)

orangeflags · 22/04/2023 20:48

Did a couple hours weeding and edging. Took all the patio furniture out of the shed and bought a big pot and compost for the hop plant I've ordered.

Zebracat · 22/04/2023 20:49

Sowed kale, chard radish and peas outside, sunflowers marigolds and squash inside. Pricked out some toms. Weeded a border. Cooed at my tadpoles, cursed the dog.
