Dead houseplant?

Hello.
I am a novice with plants so not sure if my plant is actually dead yet.
It's a houseplant, all the leaves and stems have gone but the roots look alive, but struggling. Can I rescue this or is it only fit for the compost?
I've given it a good watering to see if it revives it but I'm not even sure it is still alive.
Any tips would be greatly appreciated even if its beyond saving. Thanks 😊

I'm no expert but I think this is what is called pot bound .. as in the roots have no where to go
It should have been repotted into a bigger container with decent soil and room to move

Got to be worth a try ?

Without knowing which plant it is, it’s hard to say, but all those roots look dead and shrivelled so probably only fit for the bin, I’m afraid.

I thought the pot was too small when it was given to me (last mothers day). Ahh well, another house plant gone to houseplant heaven lol.
Thank you for the advice I'll try and keep the next one alive.
I'll give it a week and see if it improves, annoyingly I don't have a pot or compost to re pot it right now. Poor thing.

Try rinsing the soil off and pruning away the shrivelled roots. There might be a kernel of life buried in there. If there is put them in a small, suitably sized pot with some fresh potting soil. Keep it damp not wet. Otherwise, yup, the bin.

Those roots look as dead as a dodo to me, sorry.

Was it a moth orchid like this? If so it does look as though it's dead - the roots should be a silver green/grey colour and fleshy. I'd chuck it I'm afraid.

Agree with @NanTheWiser , those roots are shrivelled and brown and look dead
