Retrospective drainage in an established flower bed help!

We have an established flower bed which is now experiencing flooding due to a neighbour building an outhouse next to the fence.

Is there anything we can do re drainage as now we have a lot of plants that now are in standing water that didn’t used to?

is the neighbours new roof draining on to your flowerbed?

Merrilydancing · 17/03/2023 15:06

No, not directly but their drainage pipe is very close to the boundary which then all flows into our flowerbeds as they are slightly lower.

you can almost draw a line from the new drainpipe to where the water is now sitting in the flowerbeds. So upsetting as there are a lot of plants now in standing water.

You are not supposed to let the run-off from your building's roof/gutters flow onto somebody else's land. So my first port of call would be the local council planning department and ask for their advice and clarification.

Speak to the neighbour first and see if they can direct the flow further away

I’m not entirely sure they are the listening type which is as shame as the previous ones were lovely.

will contact the council to see what can be done.

It’s so disheartening to see my plants that we’re starting to bud just sitting in water especially as we do have a wet area so had specifically bought plants for this but this area was always dry.

how big is the area that is flooding?

You can build drainage nearby to allow the water to sink into the ground

Thanks, will take a look. It is at least a couple of metres being affected so lots of plants.

You could check to see if your house insurance includes legal cover.

And talk to Council for advice. It’s likely they did their outhouse under “permitted development”, so Council won’t take any action but they may advise. Be aware that Council funding cuts have hit planning departments hard
