Lavender advice

Hi,

Would like to plant lavender next to our footpath. Is there a good variety that won't go too big or woody or do they all eventually need to be replaced?

TIA

To avoid it going woody you need to clip it every year. Avoid French lavender (the one with the ears). Hidcote is good. It can live for years if it’s in the right sort of low nutrient, free draining soil with plenty of sun, but places like Kew replace theirs every three years to keep it looking good.

I agree - Hidcote would be a good variety. You just need to trim it like a hedge after flowering.

Brilliant, thanks.

English lavender is easy to look after. You just prune it down to to first green bits each winter if you want to keep it small. That's what I do and it goes back to about 45 cm in height and width over the summer (but it's mature now). Younger plants take up less room.

Thanks, easy to look after is top of my priority list 😉
