Is it too late to cut a hedge right back?

I want to reshape our front hedge. DH has been giving it a light trim for years and now it seems about a foot wider than it used to be but I'm worried about nesting birds.

Is it too late to cut it right back to where it used to be?

Ours was massively overgrown houses had been empty for years
cut it right back looked very sparse
but planted a few new ones at the bottom and
took a few years to come back

What plants is it made of?

Legally you have until 1st march. But even then I'd not want to ruin a popular nesting spot.

Thanks @megletthesecond. Just a light trim it is then.

I thought the legality was not to disturb a nesting site etc, but not specified dates (for garden hedges rather than roadside verges)?

Is it generally a nesting site?
If so, I'd leave it till autumn.
If not, check thoroughly for nests and if none you should be okay to cut?

Yea usually has lots of sparrows.
