What fruit/veg/salad can i grow in a flat?

I always plant a load of carrots, tomatoes, potatoes and peas in my garden. Unfortunately, I've had to move into a flat and I'm really missing the idea of fresh, home grown produce. What can i grow on a windowsil? The kitchen gets loads of sun!

Thank you!

Do you have a balcony or a shared/communal garden?

Herbs and cut and come again salad for the windowsill. Shelves or hanging baskets to increase growing area.

QuestionableMouse · 24/02/2023 15:55

I have access to a communal garden but I don't think pots would last and I'm not allowed to dig up the grass. It's a bit of a rough area unfortunately!

Beansprouts, microgreens, pea sprouts, rocket. Tomatoes in pots on the floor if windows not too high.

Nudity · 24/02/2023 15:58

I also live in a flat and I’ve grown Little Gem lettuce, chives and basil.

I’ve been looking into growing sprouts (not Brussels) as you can grow them in a jar. There’s some interesting videos on YouTube and here’s a link:

Thank you! 😁

I've for my name on the allotment waiting list so hopefully I'll be able to get one and get some veggies in!

Do you mean pots would be stolen? You can get potato bags, I have some green plastic woven ones, if you would be allowed to put them in the garden.

QuestionableMouse · 24/02/2023 16:00

Yeah, they'd either be vandalised or stolen.

Do you mean they'd get stolen or vandalised? I've seen people grow veg in all sorts of repurposed containers. If can find something vaguely suitable it might be worth a punt for the cost of a bag of compost and some seeds.

I've not tried it myself but I've seen cherry tomatoes grown in hanging baskets.

IcakethereforeIam · 24/02/2023 16:03

Sorry, cross post.

IcakethereforeIam · 24/02/2023 16:06

You can get kits to grow mushrooms. They're a little expensive but don't need sunlight.

Good luck with the allotment, I hope you're not waiting too long.

In the interim, your area might have a community garden, might be worth a look.

RedToothBrush · 24/02/2023 16:37

Growbags? Shove in some tomatoes? Who is going to nick. If they get vandalised / removed not much lost.

I have chillis I've over wintered. They are great. Wouldn't not have them. Mine will go back outside when its warmer. Just go for a shorter variety (I've a couple which are a lot taller than I'd anticipated so my spare room looks a bit like a jungle atm).

I'd pick a windowsill size tomato plant as a must too.
See something like this. There are a few varieties about:
www.suttons.co.uk/vegetable-seeds/seeds-for-kids/tomato-seeds-table-top-tomato-sweet-n-neat-red_mh-44871

As someone has mentioned, in case anyone else wants to try it, I've done tomatoes in hanging baskets before. They are brilliant. Standard hanging basket with 3 cherry lizzano plants in. Plant now, you'll have tomatoes from June to October. Really nice flavour. They probably a touch too big for the window sill though.

Other things I do for a window sill:
Rocket, coriander, parsley, spring onions, basil as my basics.

I'd consider some lettuce like this, which can be cut young:
www.premierseedsdirect.com/product/lettuce-gourmet-looseleaf-cutting-mix/

I grow a fair amount in pots, and its surprising how much you can do. Anything that will grow to required size which fits into a 20cm pot will work for a windowsill. Strawberries would work.

Ikea do these little citrus plants which I do fancy trying at some point:

www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/citrus-potted-plant-lemon-10540362/
Again they'd work on a window sill.

I go for 30cm pots for patio stuff (blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, aubergines, courgettes, squash, cucumber all work on patio in the right pots. Blackberries and raspberries go well in hanging baskets).

I grow green beans on my windowsill. They're meant to end up outside but they never do because things eat them before I do. I did have cucumbers indoors one year but the plants ended up so huge it was ridiculous!

AdaColeman · 24/02/2023 18:51

I agree that cherry tomatoes do very well in hanging baskets, I've had a lot of success with them.
On my windowsill I usually have basil and mint and rosemary, and I grow spring onions in water for snippable shoots for salads & dips.

Sorrel works well in a plant pot, and is long lasting as you can just cut a few leaves at a time to add a spike of sharpness to green salads made from more bland leaves.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 24/02/2023 20:50

Pea shoots on the windowsill are really easy and quick. You need some peas that have not been pre-boiled like these 1Kg Balsara’s Whole Green Marrowfat Peas Mushy Peas Soups, Curries Sprouting Peas Beans Grain Pulses Legumes High Protein Plant Based Pisum Medullare Low in Calories amzn.eu/d/dzaTSwz

Put a layer of compost into a tray, then a layer of peas (they can be very close together) and then a layer of compost. Water well and wait for a couple of weeks.

You can harvest your shoots with scissors and then wait a few more weeks for another crop, and possibly a third.

I eat them in salad or wilt them in risotto.

WillowBeeT · 24/02/2023 21:18

Practically anything (maybe not watermelons or pineapples) it all depends on how much room you want to dedicate to it, and the orientation of your windows to the sun (and a balcony would be a God send.)

Best advice, go on YouTube and search. Watch real videos of real people actually growing in their flats and on their balconies. You don’t even need seeds often times. You can grow spring onions for example from the ends of your spring onions.

QuestionableMouse · 24/02/2023 21:28

Thank you for all the ideas! I've ordered one of those tomato kits! 😁

Peppers and chilli peppers can be grown indoors.

helpfulperson · 24/02/2023 22:00

The first year of COVID I did tomatoes and cucumbers. Also basil and parsley. My mum did radishes on a windowsill but mine failed. Lettuce can also work I believe although I've never tried it. There is always cress and mustard seed as well.

Blowyourowntrumpet · 24/02/2023 22:03

I've grown peppers in pots on the kitchen windowledge.

user15297345 · 24/02/2023 22:32

I've done peppers and chillis from seeds of supermarket ones I cooked with and they don't grow too big. Spring onions do well, just plant a inch of the root end and you can cut just a bit and they regrow.

Love the little tomatoes and pea shoots, I might try them! I've grown tomatoes for years and they take over the whole window so I like the idea of something more compact.

Watercress - grow mine in a pot every year. Really easy.
