Hi all
Usually my dad starts the seedlings off and passes to me but last year's ones he said were not very sweet, as we have a greenhouse now he's asked me to order some seeds and start them, what cherry tomatoes would you recommend that are sweet? Not sungold though, we want red ones and I've heard not great things about moneymaker

Thank you!

sweet millions?

Sagittariusrising · 23/02/2023 14:33

Tumbling Tom is a well known red one and Sungold is a lovely yellow one which was very sweet when I grew it last year. Both are reliable and good croppers.

Oh dear, was coming to recommend money maker and sun gold! They are my favourite ones.

AlisonDonut · 23/02/2023 14:38

I have over 20 varieties of cherry tomatoes in my sowing list this year.

Most cherry tomatoes are sweet, well the ones that you get in packets in garden centres are. My favourite are not red ones at all. Perhaps just go to Wilko and buy a red cherry tomato packet that says they are sweet?

My favourite last year were a green cherry tomato. They were fantastic. Sungold are the sweetest though, hands down.

Only a thought. But the conditions they grow in can affect the sweetness. Last summer was very hot. Did you grow inside?

Sagittariusrising · 23/02/2023 20:06

@DobbyTheHouseElk I only grow outside in hanging baskets, but you're right about the sun making a difference. Hoping it will be good again this year.

Garden pearl..aka as Gartenperle.. and Rosada... both red and sweet !

Nachtvlinder · 23/02/2023 21:14

Last year, I grew Sungold, Rosella and Sweet Million; struggled with them due to the heatwave, but in previous years, they were plentiful.

I'm starting mine tomorrow, under light and heat.

Sun gold are really sweet, don’t give up after one year, try them again, they are so delicious. Especially in the greenhouse, straight off the plant.

Tumbling Tom and Red Alert were amazing for me last year, no staking either.

Gardener's Delight are insanely sweet.

In lockdown, I followed some Indian bloke on Youtube. He sliced a tomato, laid the slices on top of compost, tiny bit of compost over the top and 10 days later had millions of seedlings. That easy. I used a supposedly 'F1' cherry tom from Tescos. 10 days later I had 150 seedlings. I handed them out to the whole street and we had a tomato harvest competition.. Grin

There is a really good article about this in March's Gardeners World magazine - lots of info from a trial last year. Worth a look?

we always go back to Gardeners Delight. Really easy to grow and very tasty!

Sockbogies · 26/02/2023 13:35

My best crops have been from keeping the tomato pips from my salad, drying them and them growing them.

SBAM · 01/03/2023 19:21

I grew sweet million last year and got lots of very sweet (almost too sweet) tomatoes. Grown in the greenhouse, fairly neglected, I definitely didn’t pinch the tips soon enough or feed them fortnightly.

TheGander · 03/03/2023 15:50

Sweet aperitif.

Bamaluz · 04/03/2023 15:47

Tumbling toms.
DH's favourite tomato.
