Hi all. My youngest would like to make a little flower garden in our small front garden. I have no idea where to start. What are good flowers to plant at this time of year? Thank you

Do you know what way your front garden faces? This will greatly impact what will grow. Does it get sun all day or just at certain times?

Are you looking for something to plant with immediate impact? You can pick up ranunculus, primula and violas in garden centres at the moment, all of which would be suitable for a small area.

It's south facing so gets quite a bit of sunlight.

Thank you. Will take a look at them.

If it's south-facing you can get lots but you may need to consider how much watering you'll want to do.
I have a south facing front garden & have filled it with Mediterranean herbs as they're pretty drought resistant - so I have rosemary, lavender, thyme, sage & oregano. I've also put in lots of spring bulbs (daffodils, muscari, alliums, snowdrops, bluebells etc).
Look for perennials that will either come back each year (like echinacea, irises etc) or be there all year.

You can buy garden plants and seeds from DIY stores, the budget shops and supermarkets along with compost and the like. Often cheaper than garden centres and the selection can be surprisingly wide.

Thank you all. We've decided to do flowers that have been recommended plus some herbs that have also been recommended. I'll come back with some progress pictures if anyone wants to see 🙂.

If u have a family run garden nursery near u. I suggest u pop along and have a chat. I am new to gardening. And I spent ages talking to staff down there. They helped me so much. Take ur daughter with u. I bet they will be so good and help her decide.
I tried this in the larger places like b&q and didn’t get the help I needed.

It's my son, but thank you that's very helpful.

If you can buy pots of snowdrops and have a part of the garden that gets some shade, they’re good to plant now. They are best planted as plants rather than bulbs and will pop up again next year when little else is flowering.

Bear in mind it's still early in the season for flowers, there will be a much bigger choice in a couple of months.

If you want to try growing from seed cosmos are really good ones to try as they have a great success rate and grow big and bushy very quickly.
