Is there any way to get rid of ivy?

We have a tree down the bottom and the trunk is covered in ivy, also it's started to spread along the fence now. Dh strims it down from the fence every little while but it's spreading. Is there anyway we can get rid of it?

Brute force and hard work! I have cleared loads of Ivy from trees, trellises, buildings.
Try to cut the stems as low as possible and then just pull!
Be aware that some birds nest in Ivy and they will be making those nests now. If you can, do wait till next Autumn.

Agree on the nesting - it’s started.

Wait until late August and cut all stems at the bottom then leave to die off for a few months - makes it much easier to pull off and much less likely to damage whatever it has grown up.

if you have an area that doesn’t matter then leaving some of it is good for wildlife :-)

Cut the ivy all the way round the tree at a convenient height, all the ivy above will gradually die off. Then strip the ivy down from where you cut and cut at the base of the tree. It will come back, but once you get rid of the worst it's an easy once a year job. Similarly cut the ivy along the bottom of the fence and pull off or leave to die. Or move house!

But that's only pruning it, isn't it?Confused
Pull it out by the root.

WE had a load like this horrible. As said cut a clear circle around the trunk at a height that is easy to reach, you may need a small battery saw to get through the big stuff, make sure you have maybe 50 cm gap with no ivy crossing it. It will maybe take a year but all above will die. Strip the lower stuff as and when.

Greentree1 · 22/02/2023 18:09

Ooops 50 mm gap, half a metre might be difficult!

Greentree1 · 22/02/2023 18:11

You just want to see a clear gap to the bark all around the trunk at a particular level so you haven't missed anything.

Greentree1 · 22/02/2023 18:13

And cut any links between the tree and the fence!

Pruning didn’t make a dent in ours so I eventually used Roundup gel. It looks kind of like a stick deodorant, you just rub it on the leaves so it doesn’t affect adjacent plants. It kills it right down to the root, but might take a few applications on tough ivy.

Greentree1 · 22/02/2023 18:41

Our ivy at the base of the tree was individual vines inches thick way beyond roundup I think, and looks like a similar problem for the OP judging by the amount of ivy up the tree. Might work for the fence ivy though.

Does it matter if its on the tree? Its excellent for wildlife.

I get taking it off the fence, but the tree?

I've seen plenty of trees toppled by an overload of ivy.
