What is your gardening equivalent to putting a nice vase of flowers on the table before guests come over?

I was just thinking how I have an automatic mental list of things I'd do in the house if I had guests coming over and wanted the place to look nice - quick hoover; quick dust, pop some flowers in a vase, open a window - and I wondered if there is a garden equivalent for you? Or, when you're feeling a bit blue at home you might treat yourself to a bunch of flowers and make a pot of proper tea in the good teapot - what do you do in the garden to give yourself the same 'cheer up, there are nice things here' kind of vibe?

I have put a pot of iris reticulata by the front door where I can enjoy them. What about you?

The whole garden looks better if the lawn looks good. A mow and an edge makes everything look that little bit more tidy and intentional.

I have pots by the front door, too. I rotate them round, depending what's in season. I also have pots on the wide steps up to the lawn.

That's so true about the lawn, @senua! One of my real bugbears with this garden is the lawn. When we moved in it was waist-high grass full of weeds, and we discovered it was mostly Victorian rubbish dump overlaid with builders' rubble, which a previous owner had put down as hard standing for his vans. Needless to say it doesn't look manicured! Even so, I definitely notice the difference when it's freshly strimmed.

Your pots on wide steps sound beautiful!

Funnily enough, I actually DO put a big vase of flowers on the garden table. It looks wonderful.

Yes, pots are good for quick cheer - rotating them (my favourite pot for by the front door at this time of year is a sweet box, such fabulous scent) or quickly putting in something fresh - I got three lovely bright primulas today.

Bedding plants / herbs / bulbs in a pot depending on the time of year and amount of notice I have. Pots on tables/deck/patio as appropriate.

I cut the grass and edge around my paving slab path , it makes such a difference and makes me happy after I've done it .

Not at this time of year, but a good deadheading session makes everything look much better without too much effort or getting ones hands dirty.

Grass cut and edges trimmed

Pot of something on outdoor table (stays out all year round) - at the moment it is potted narcissus

By our front door we have a evergreen pillar eutnonymous either side - last year I placed a pot in front of each which firstly I planted with hyacinths & in summer followed by fuchsias

A good jet washing session of the patio and front paths. Always makes me feel great!

MereDintofPandiculation · 20/02/2023 10:49

Trim the edge of the grass and a path through the middle. Rest doesn’t matter. Weed the gravel paths. Cut back stuff to reveal any flowers that are being smothered. Remove obvious dandelions - the average non-gardener won’t recognise any other “weeds”, and won’t spot them in a well filled border.

BlackbeardsToast · 20/02/2023 12:33

Sweep the patios and cut the lawn. Makes a big difference to the general 'upkeep' vibe of the garden.

Also, only invite people over in May when most the flowers are out Grin

Nannyfannybanny · 20/02/2023 12:37

Agree, cut the grass. No one then notices the odd weed. Have pots from and back filled all year round.on the drive out the front, patio out the back.what time is the cuppa ready,I do insist on cup and saucer....none of this mug lark!

SarahAndQuack · 25/02/2023 09:36

Oops, I lost track of this thread. Thank you for lovely suggestions!

@BlackbeardsToast - oh, if only! Until I had my own garden I never appreciated just how hard it is to get a garden looking good for nine months of the year, and how easy it is for three of them.

Came on to say edging the lawn but everyone else has already said that! And yes to a pot of cheap and cheerful bedders in a pot on the garden table. I’ve got these on mine right now and it cheers me up every time I walk past it to the gate.
