How much to cut back old woody rose? Pic attached

There's a rose bush in my front garden I've inherited off previous owners. It looks quite old and woody. I don't have much experience with roses but gave it a bit of a trim back a while ago. However, just wondering if I should have gone a bit more drastic, and cut back the bigger stems? I can see shoots coming off them quite far down (2nd pic supposed to show this but a bit rubbish!). Any advice from a y rose growers out there?

I’d cut back to the second shoot from the bottom if it’s outward facing.
I have old, woody shrub roses, I cut them back by 50% late autumn and by a further third to a half in the spring. Always to an outward facing bud. I completely remove any branches crossing another and I try to create a bowl shape with a clear middle.

Id cut the biggest branches to approx the same length, (above an outward growing bud) about 7 bricks up.keeping the fork,
Cut all mini rubbish & dead wood from the bottom.
Fertilize.

Advice from a rose grower here.

I'd take that back at least a third to an outward facing bud on each branch. My rule is always dead, diseased, damaged or disorderly removed first, clear the middle to encourage air to pass through and then prune back by at least a third, usually quite a lot more. I have a bush rose at the front of my house which looked a lot like this when I moved into my house. I cut it right back to two buds on each branch and now, a few years later, it has around 150 flower heads by summer. It's stunning.

Roses, down to about 4-6 inches, just above an outward facing bud.

Thanks all, I will get cracking tomorrow, assuming it's okay to do it this time of year....
