I planted four of these last year. Went really well. All survived. But some of them still have their old flowers on.
I was told to leave them on over winter if they were still there. Which I did. But when do I cut them off ?
I have looked on the internet but everyone answer is different. Some say leave them on. Some say cut them off. Help please !!!

I cut them off when I see new fresh growth, I did some yesterday.

I prune when I see new growth so usually around March or April

SlipSlidinAway · 16/02/2023 07:11

Don't cut them off yet. The old flowers protect the new growth. Wait until there's no more chance of frost. I'll be doing mine end March/early April.

Wait until at least March, if you are nervous wait till nearly April when there will be decent new growth and you will be able to confidently see where to cut. I do this every year and they always look good, it's the only time I touch them!

I leave my mop head hydrangeas alone as they don’t perform well if I remove the heads. Limelight and lace cap I shape as I take the heads off in March.

Floralnomad · 16/02/2023 17:28

We have new growth but I’m not taking my old heads off until after the worst of the winter weather is definitely over so not yet .

VictoriaBun · 16/02/2023 17:31

Wait until you have new leaves growing underneath the old mops If you are still getting morning frosts leave the mops as they protect them

When you cut them off cut back to first set of new leaves .

Right. So leave for now. Thanks!!!!

Birds use the old heads for shelter by day, so I don't cut back till April.

I cut back my Annabelles in Autumn - I left them until Spring one year but they didn’t perform as well. I leave mopheads until March/April although am itching to cut back now as they look terrible!

CentrifugalBumblePuppy · 18/02/2023 13:06

I don’t usually cut the heads until there’s no risk of frost (usually end of March/April in the south east). Mine do have lots of leaves coming through now, but we’re expecting low night temperatures for the next couple of weeks. So I’m going to do the lazy thing & leave them for now!

Can you tell us the variety or post a photo? Some types of hydrangea are pruned differently to others.

I pruned mine old lady swimming cap variety in march/april.
half of the stalks right down, the other half just above the first leave buds under the flowerhead.
