Will this work? Plants for shallow soil.

I have a strip of horrible concrete next to my drive. It runs along the base of a wall and looks awful. The previous owners covered it in artificial turf, still looks horrible.

I'm not in a position to spend much money but I wondered about placing rockery stones (I have lots of these) on the concrete to keep compost there and then planting stuff that won't mind that the soil is shallow.

It's an area that gets lots of sun. But that could also mean it's dry. Do you think this will work? If so what should I plant?

Missed out I would put compost in between the stones and the wall. Only probably not much. How deep would it need to be?

What is the wall? If you put a depth of compost there are you breaching somebody's damp proof course?
Why not just put pots and planters there.

It's not the wall of a house. It's my wall so won't breach any damp proof course. I could put pots in, but it's a long wall so a lot of pots needed.

This would work fine with the right plants. I would suggest things like sedums (small ones like sedum acre or tall ones like spectabile and matrona), herbs like thyme and oregano, possibly some heucheras might make it too (not too fancy ones). I would also throw in some bulbs, small ones like crocuses or muscari.

Thanks @CatherinedeBourgh I think those plants sound great and aren't expensive. Can't wait to get going now and remove the artificial turf.

Look for varieties recommended for green roofs? They should cope with it

Sempervivums. You could also try rock plants with fleshy leaves - anything with fleshy leaves has been designed to store water in periods of drought

This grows between the steps in my garden - it’s very pretty - not as profuse as in the pic but would be worth a try. You could probably just sprinkle seeds.

Exactly what I was going to say.
