Good medium sized shrubs for large planters in West facing position?

The planters are the tall, narrow trough ones from Primrose (dimensions as pictured). They hold a lot of soil and so are quite good for larger plants (I've added more drainage holes than the standard). They currently have cherry laurel insitu which have been in for around 5yrs but they aren't very happy, a bit scrappy and a few brown leaves. I'm planning to transplant them into the ground to recover and reuse the planters with fresh compost, but I'm unsure what to put in.

Whatever goes in needs to be,

  • Happy in a container
  • Happy West facing (can get hot in summer)
  • Ideally evergreen/semi evergreen (is positioned for zoning/screening)
  • Easily managed at 4ish ft tall (not inc planter!)

I’m a big fan of euonymus Silver Queen - such lovely, variegated foliage, responds well to pruning and keeping it under control, and grows compact and dense for cover. In Regents Park a few years ago I saw it being used in place of box to create a knot garden, and it was performing well even with being tightly managed.

I've got a similar situation (although slightly bigger planters), so watching with interest.

Currently hoping I can find a camellia which would cope with the western aspect, as I know they like more shade than that.

Another one I'm considering is sarcococca, as I like the idea of a beautiful scent

It’s a bit Long and thin like it wants a row of plants? I have 2 large pots with an edible bay in one and a strawberry tree in another. Underplanted with some random perennials. What about a herb themed pot bay, rosemary, sage are ever green and would like a free draining soil in a sunny spot.
