Which is your best performing rose?

In terms of volume and continuous production of blooms? I have many roses in my garden, and although I love them all, some are divas that throw out three gorgeous blooms over the summer and then rest on their laurels expecting adoration for their limited efforts. Looking at you, Summer Song and Lady Emma Hamilton.

Others, like Lady of Shallot and Jacqueline du Pre, just go on and on and on, a perpetual cloud of colour and perfume.

I intend to plant up a small border along DDad’s new bungalow. It’s a small space and the only place on the tiny plot for any planting, so whatever I plant there has to be good value in terms of repeat flowering. I can fit half a dozen roses, and will underplant with Geranium Rozanne (probably). Before I just order six Ladies of Shallot, I’m interested to see what others have found to be good performers.

Hi @VenusClapTrap its a Cytisus Battandieri , Pineapple Broom and the flowers really do smell of pineapple.

Cuppa2sugars · 22/02/2023 07:13

Has anyone got Mum in a Million ? All my roses have only been in since last summer, none of them performed perfusley but they haven’t been in long enough. Austin Rose Olivia is one of them too.

Marking my place on this lovely thread ✨️

VenusClapTrap · 22/02/2023 17:28

Thanks @MsFannySqueers I’ll have to find a space for one of those. Love a splash of bright yellow.

Well, thanks to this thread I have three new rose bushes arriving today. I already own some that have been mentioned. I needed a partner for New Dawn and I have gone with Deep Secret. I'm hoping that the mix of pale pink and deep red will go well. They will be trained against the side of my (white) garage wall. Hoping that backdrop will work.

This is easily my most exciting time of year. Shoots and buds staring to appear, sowing tomatoes, herbs etc and planning the summer bedding. A time of real promise.

Another vote for Roald Dahl.

VenusClapTrap · 25/02/2023 14:04

I got the new border all dug over and weeded, and edged it with lovely reclaimed bricks that I had lying around in my wood shed. All ready for planting. Within 24 hrs the neighbours had driven over it in their hulking great Range Rover and crushed the edging.

Need a rethink. As this is MN, I feel penguin bollards may be in order.

I have a Pam Ayres rose - pink tipped yellow petals, very pretty - that came as a cutting from my father about 20 years ago, and I think I bought it for them about 10 years before that. Blooms lots and for ages.

Sorry your border got ruined

Stickytreacle · 25/02/2023 15:12

I have lots of DA roses, but some of my most prolific flowerers are actually cheapy supermarket roses, I stuck several in a few years ago ( they may have been Lilli Marlene?) They always do well and cost a fraction to buy initially, if your dad's planning on extending the garage then Id be wary of spending loads!

Winchester Cathedral - beautiful climbing up a trellis around the front door but then we moved house, must get one to plant here. A new one which is doing very well is W.B. Yeats, given to me as a gift, but it's not as lovely as the Winchester Cathedral!

That's bloody annoying!

I have a Ferdinand Pichard rose which is a pattern I can only describe as raspberry ripple. In the first year it had 3 blooms but grew a lot. In the second year I had two long flushes. It was absolutely covered and could be smelled from a few metres away.

I have just got an FP in bare root form. It is so difficult to find! Am praying I have planted it right as it is so so beautiful. A real old fashioned stunner.

Seaitoverthere · 25/02/2023 22:34

Lady in the Lake did well in old house so have ordered it for new garden.

BestIsWest · 25/02/2023 22:37

I’ve just ordered the Generous Gardener from DA. I’ve bit of an obsession with pale pink roses at the moment.

Can anyone recommend a really prolific flowering non climbing white rose? I've got a climbing Iceberg and a white tea that grows into an ornamental cherry but would like some roses at border level - ideally something that can be ordered as a bush. In an ideal world I love it to smell but floriferous is the main thing.

Jacqueline du Pre. Really beautiful white floribunda rose which smells heavenly and is a mass of flowers all summer.

Great thread, thank you. I have struggled with a Gertrude J in mine, but I think it is because it is rather dry (overhung by trees). I've just pruned it and will give it a really good mulch and feed.

Any recommendations for an arch, again overhung by trees? Have been wondering about a Constance Spry but will look up some of the ideas here too. Pink or white ideally.

And OP, your bloody neighbours! Are they aware of what they've done? What will you say?

VenusClapTrap · 26/02/2023 09:32

I sent them a text telling them my edging had been driven over and crushed into the ground less than 24hrs after I installed it, and asked them to please be careful not to drive over it. They’ve replied saying that I’ve made it difficult for them by putting in an edging that’s ‘standing proud’ and suggesting I let them pave over the whole thing. 🙄

Cheeky so and sos. If only they could pay attention when they drive your raised edge should not matter.

londonmummy1966 · 26/02/2023 12:22

@VenusClapTrap - thank you - DD is a cellist and JdP is her hero so a good shout....

God what CFs those neighbours are - I'd tell them to buy a smaller car if they can't drive the one they've got properly. (Well no I wouldn't but I'd think it). Sed them a bill for new brick edging and tell them that you are about to spend humungous amounts on very expensive species roses so they'll be paying for those as well if they don't start driving more carefully.

cobblers123 · 26/02/2023 12:29

I have a Gertrude Jekyll shrub rose and I've decided to put it into a large pot. It will be going into the back garden in front of a west facing fence so will get a lot of sun during the summer.

Has anyone any tips how to get the best out of it? It's the most expensive rose I've bought so don't want to do something that might hinder its growth or not give me the massive array of flowers I am hoping for. Thanks IA.😁

I’ve just gone for The Generous Gardner for my new rose arch - that was after a couple of recommendations on another thread. It’s only been in for a few months, so I can’t vouch for it personally, but am hopeful that it’s going to do well.

AndrexPuppy · 26/02/2023 13:05

DA Gertrude Jekyll shrub rose. It goes on and on and doesn’t need a load of fuss.

In contrast, I had Winchester Cathedral (another DA) in the same bed and it just never got going. I gave it a good change to settle in and establish but ended up taking it out after about 5yrs.

I am not very experienced with roses but, while my experience with GJ has been ok it hasn't been fantastic. In my case I think the issue has been it being overhung with trees and not getting consistently enough water. So if you're going to put yours in a pot I'd make sure you keep an eye on moisture levels. Why do you want to move it into a pot?
