Hoya Carnosa - help me rescue it!

This once was a beautiful thriving plant with variegated leaves, green yellow and a tint of pink, but in my zeal to reduce the frequency of watering, I overwatered it, it seems and has become this sorry sight!

Lots of leaves are shrivelled and brown although there are a few green ones. Wonder what’s happening at root level?

Is there anything that I can do to rescue it?😞

I would trim off any leaves that are obviously dead and then look at the roots - are there any that remain firm or are they all mushy? Trim off the latter. Repot the whole thing into new unsoggy compost, give it a little water, and cross your fingers!! Good luck.

Going to do that this morning!

Do as PP has said, but take cuttings from your trimmings. Just put the cutting with two top leaves in a jar of water. They should soon produce roots.
I’ve had a Hoya for nearly 40 years, it thrives on neglect and flowers frequently. I rarely repot it.

My tangled, but happy Hoya. It’s about 90 cms tall.

@Beebumble2 - wow!!! Did you say nearly 40yrs?!

so would I just cut the stem above these leaves and stick that bit of the stem into some water?

Yes nearly 40 years. It started as two leaves!
The stem in the photo is too far gone. It needs to be a healthy green one. If you’ve no longer got any, do as previous poster suggests and wait for new growth. When the plant has fully recovered and put on some good new growth, then try some cuttings.
Cuttings are taken from a longish stem, above a leaf node. Then all leaves removed apart from the top two. Then pop it into a jar of water and wait.

Oh dear, I can’t see any green stem.

looks like it’ll be a long wait……

Give it a go - you've nothing to lose! If it dies you can get a new one and it will grow fast enough.

I've killed so many plants in my time, all a learning experience ;)

This is my Hoya - two years ago it was 3 stems with about 8 leaves between them.

Where are you keeping it? They are quite fussy. The don't like direct sunlight

Maggiethecat · 06/02/2023 21:11

@WobblyLondoner - beautiful plant!

That’s what’s so annoying I nurtured mine from a few leaves until they grow lovely trailing stems.

@Nannyfannybanny - it’s in a well lit room, but not direct sunlight. I truly think it was the over watering that did it!

until ‘it grew’ lovely trailing stems

They store water in their thick leaves. Water very sparingly, they thrive on neglect. When the leaves begin to look a bit wrinkly then water.
