I have some space in my allotment. Not sure which variety to pick. Previously had Cambridge favourite but they got a lot of blight. Any recommendations welcome.

I haven't grown strawberries in years but when I lived in France I had Mara des bois in a window box. They were smaller than supermarket strawberries but so flavourful. It was pretty much the only strawberry plant I could find in the garden centres in Paris.

Thanks superduper. That one is in the running, Thompson and Morgan have a sale in and they stock it.

I grew Elsanta purely by chance - picked up a tray in B&Q - and they were fantastic, well known for high yields, had a 1x1m bed with them in and got loads of fruit for 2 years, a bit less last year but they were a bit overcrowded by then. You can apparently get an early crop by lifting them in autumn and refrigerating them to trick them into thinking winter has come and then planting out quite early the following year but I didn’t try that. Have cleared the bed but will be planting the same again if I can find it.

That’s interesting goblin. They have the image of being the ultimate supermarket strawberry but maybe the difference is growing them yourself which means they will taste better. Thompson and Morgan have a free package and posting offer today so I’m just going to order Malling Centenary, purely sentimental as I’m from Kent.

In the past I did well with Honeoye in the southern UK in containers.

Elsanta does well for me. Mara des Bois is ever bearing and is great in my greenhouse but doesn’t fruit well outdoors. I’m in the Midlands.

That was my worry with Mara des bois, I don’t have a greenhouse although I am in London. I’ve also been burnt by going for heritage varieties then finding the flavour doesn’t really deliver and they are prone to disease.

I’ve had good results with Marshmello. Really nice texture & flavour and good disease resistance.
