Are these big enough to pot up individually?

Tia.

Not really, I always wait until until the next set of leaves arrive.

Not as the size they are now - I normally sow 3 or 4 in ~2" square pots and wait until they are 3-4" tall - robust enough to pull the entwined root systems apart - they are quite resilient IMHO - I keep them under a clear plastic cover on a south facing windowsill until they are almost touching the top of the cover then split them up. Over the subsequent weeks - I put them outside if it's sunny and not too cold but bring them back in at night - just to get them used to being outside. I haven't even sown mine yet - I usually do it the first day of Feb - first things I start growing. I had a poor crop last year from about 15 plants that all grew to be 12-16" tall - don't know why it was so poor (possibly poor seeds from ebay - the commercial ones I've used previously - e.g. Suttons, were much better - esp. Scotch Bonnets) - that 40C heat wave really helped with the flowering - they were sluggish throughout.

Good luck. I don't sow my chilli seeds until April.

I wouldn't pot those on for a good while yet. They have plenty of room, just a bit early for seeds in January where I live, even indoors.

greenacrylicpaint · 27/01/2023 17:04

no.
you need to wait until they have their first set of real leaves.

fine looking seedlings though.

AlisonDonut · 27/01/2023 17:04

No not yet.

Fordian · 27/01/2023 18:58

Thank you, all. I tend to buy seedlings- correction, I tend to 🙄 as my non-gardening DH buys seedlings... then I look after them; but this year my young adult DS bought seeds, off eBay so lord knows their pedigree... I'm helping him grow them.

I know we've gone early, but I'm reminded of 2 years ago (when we last did them) when autumn was well and truly upon us before we got baby ripe chillies.

I don't eat chilli sauce. 😂

The leaves you have there are cotyledons, seed leaves, for temporary sustenance while the plant is putting down roots. Wait till the seedlings had at least one pair of true leaves

I started planting my seeds in Feb after reading that Monty Don does that (in his Down To Earth book). I also use the same seed potting mix that he uses - roughly equal parts John Innes No.1, agricultural sand/grit and Vermiculite - I use it for all my seeds.
