Inlaws have a small courtyard style garden. Mil would like to make it a flower garden. What plants can we buy/grow from seed/from bulb as cheaply as possible? Preferably perennials.

she made this list and is open to ideas:

Tulips
Dahlia
Marigold
Roses (SIL got some cuttings that rooted)
Hyacinth
Camellia
Chrysanthemums

It’ll be nice to have blooms for the longest time possible. Also I understand Roses and Camellias take time to establish and mature.

  1. What are the flowering seasons for the above plants?
  2. Do any of the above need digging up every year?
  3. When do the seeds/bulbs need sowing?

Thanks!

Gladioli grow from bulbs and are pretty bomb proof. Lots of different colours and last a long time if cut and put in water. Best to grow them with canes for support as they can get blown about if windy.

Geraniums in bright red look lovely in pots in a courtyard. You can take cuttings to overwinter and plant out following year. One mature plant could give 10 or more cuttings that you just leave dipped in water and roots grow.

@jazz12 best to wait until the plant is in active growth again. April/ May would be best then you'll have flowering cuttings by August.
