Location for wildlife pond

I am in process of redesigning my back garden and would love to incorporate a wildlife pond. However the only two areas I think I can fit it are either
a) Full sun pretty much all day
b) Shady and next to tree line/under trees

I don't think either area would be ideal - would be interested in others thoughts...

Full sun and then allow plenty of plants to grow over it, such as duckweed to cover the surface and marginals to provide edging shade.

Lots of lovely planst that will enjoy the full sun aspect and yet shade the water for you.

Sun. You will need to cover a good proportion with plants to keep down blanket weed.

if you do it in the shade, you will need to net it for several weeks to stop leaves falling into it. It’s possible, but a lot more work to keep itfresh

Make sure it is deep, at least a mètre in one place.

Def full sun, and while waiting for marginals to grow, tall pots with leafy things to make sure the water doesn't heat above frog or newt temperature! And you'll know about making a shallow section with easy access for said newts and frogs and hedgehogs.

Full sun or it will be permanently full of leaves. As well as some depth, shallower areas at the edges.

Thanks all, I will take this all on board! I am starting to think I might actually build it in the front garden instead now which only gets sun at latter end of the day... not sure if it will reap the same benefits though and do i want to encourage wildlife so near the (albeit quiet) road? fells like it would be quie a nice use of space as it's a bit bare and boring out there at the moment...

DD2 and I built a pond in lockdown and did just what you have said, used it to give interest to the front garden. It is fab and people visiting the house often stop for a look. It is close to the road (also fairly quiet, in a village), behind a hedge so lots of concealed areas and we had 3 frogs in the first year. One of the best things I've done. It gets sun all afternoon but not in the morning.

Sun and nice and deep, 1m+ with one side with a shelving/sloping entrance so the birds and animals can get in for a drink/bathe and out again safely. Cobbles here are really helpful.

Plant up with loads of marginals and in autumn you might want to put a mesh over it to catch leaves otherwise they can get full of them and then very smelly!

ooo thanks @CheshireSplat that's really good to know!

My parents one is well established and there's dozens of frogs each year, newts, all manner of insects including mayfly and dragonfly larvae, water boatmen etc The birds and hedgehogs use it daily. It's a proper little hive of activity and it's glorious on a warm summer evening to watch over it with a glass of wine

Thanks @GuyFawkesDay , this is what I am aiming for 😊
