PritiPatelsMaker · 01/01/2023 12:57

After the garden being seriously neglected this year due to a myriad my main plan is:

to give the garden a really good tidy up

Do little things when I can like planting seeds and bulbs. Spring bulbs already planted

Lurk around in here more for inspiration

Make the garden and gardening a bit of an escape/haven

@Thisbastardcomputer So sorry to hear of your loss , what a terrible shock for you and the family 💐
I second @70isaLimitNotaTarget suggestion of a lovely plant in her memory ,

Namechangeforthis88 · 21/01/2023 20:18

@Thisbastardcomputer how awful, I hope in time a little gardening each day brings some peace and hope.

I have finally made some good progress on the wildlife pond I mentioned pages ago. Loads to do!

That's brilliant @Namechangeforthis88. Sounds like you've been really busy Wink

@PritiPatelsMaker @Namechangeforthis88 @70isaLimitNotaTarget @Veryfishy

Thank you ladies for your comments x

If she had a favourite plant, I'm not aware, they didn't have a garden but her favourite colour was purple, if you can suggest something nice and almost impossible to kill off, I'd appreciate it.

Namechangeforthis88 · 21/01/2023 22:02

Buddleia and periwinkle both have purple flowers and are pretty tough. I always think buddleia would grow on the moon if it got half a chance.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 21/01/2023 22:15

@Thisbastardcomputer

Yes to buddleia , they are beautiful , tough plants . The smell of the flowers too , like honey . Often callled The Butterfly Bush as they attract butterflies (and bees)

Someone suggested I put some of my Dads ashes in my garden and plant a tree , but lets face it , my Dad was not green fingered in life and could kill a plastic plant Shock !

Whatevergetsyouthroughthenight · 22/01/2023 12:55

@Thisbastardcomputer sorry for your loss. My DH died suddenly a few years ago and I have a plant that flowers around the time he died as a memorial in my garden. As your DIL passed before Christmas, a viburnum bodantense ‘dawn’, a winter flowering honeysuckle or a skimmia rubella all look good at that time of year, although not purple I’m afraid but all scented.

As to my resolution, try and stop buying/growing so many plants. I have a serious problem with eyes bigger than garden!

PritiPatelsMaker · 22/01/2023 17:31

So sorry for your loss too Whatevergets. I choosing a plant that flowers at the time of his death is such a beautiful way to remember him.

My DF died in a Hospice with a view of Snowdrops through the window. I think I will plant some up next yearFlowers

@Whatevergetsyouthroughthenight thank you

RebeccaSharp · 24/01/2023 23:43

@Thisbastardcomputer sending my sympathies as well, what terrible news Flowers

I sent the DTs out at the weekend to plant some bulbs, gave them pots, compost, bulbs... what could go wrong?! Well, the general layer of compost all over the patio would suggest that their planting skills could still do with some work... Confused

PritiPatelsMaker · 25/01/2023 08:08

Oh dear @RebeccaSharp! You have DTs and you thought "what could go wrong"? I think that might have been your first mistake Grin

Just out of interest, what did you ask them to plant?

OP posts:
RebeccaSharp · 26/01/2023 08:21

I know @PritiPatelsMaker ... hope springs eternal and all that!!

We had some daffodil bulbs left over so I said they might as well plant those. Not sure they have survived the planting process though Confused

PritiPatelsMaker · 26/01/2023 15:43

Not sure they have survived the planting process though. They've hit a better chance than they did in the house and at least the DTs were kept busy Wink

Very true @PritiPatelsMaker Grin

I'm hoping to plant some more bulbs (and generally tidy up the garden post the DTs' 'help'!) but it's still weather dependent... today we had freezing drizzle. Urgh.

daisychain01 · 27/01/2023 06:48

I'm very excited because my chilli seeds have finally germinated. They are very slow starters, but they took it to the limit - 25 days! But they are now waking up and making up for lost time!

PritiPatelsMaker · 27/01/2023 07:34

That's very exciting @daisychain01. You'll have to post some pictures at some point Wink

Will be happy to post up a photo later, im glad you dont think I'm too ridiculous for being excited @PritiPatelsMaker 👍 🌱 Grin

daisychain01 · 27/01/2023 18:58

Little seeds make beautiful seedlings

Chilli Tabasco
Chilli Hot Shake
Rocket
Tomato Losetto (Bush habit, to grow in a pot on the patio)
4 types of Basil Mix

So envious @daisychain01! I still haven't had a single leaf.

OP posts:
daisychain01 · 29/01/2023 11:44

are you trying to grow chilli seeds, @PritiPatelsMaker ?

what I think helped mine was to pop them on the radiator with a couple of sheets of newspaper underneath to protect them from the hot air drying out the compost - just an hour a day for two days, a little blast of heat, gave them a much needed boost 😊 👍

RedDiamond · 29/01/2023 12:26

@viques Has your potting table arrived? Is it any good? I am thinking of ordering one.

LeatherSoledShoes · 29/01/2023 12:39

@Thisbastardcomputer , that must be very hard for you. Purple is also my favourite flower colour. I have tons of them, I think my favourites are Agapanthus purple cloud and Verbena bonariensis. Both very hardy and come back year on year.

I'm not a proper gardener any more, I only have a courtyard at my current house, thinking of moving and I definitely want a bigger garden.

I've just spent three hours out there, sweeping up leaves from my neighbour's beech trees and cutting things back that I didn't have chance to do in the autumn.

My plans for this year include culling a few plants that have been limping along for years and actually thinking about what I plant instead of just buying whatever takes my fancy at the nursery.

Hi, it isn’t 100% wonderful to tell the truth, the drawers were hard to assemble and don’t open at all, the rest went together fine though a bit wobbly until you get the final struts in place. The instructions say not to have it outside, which mine has to be, and it is made of what looks and feels like some sort of compressed wood so I am not sure how long it will last. But it is a good height and decent size for potting on so if you weren’t too bothered by storing things in the drawers and have somewhere a bit sheltered to keep it then it will be ok. I am going to keep mine outside and hope for the best as I need somewhere to work on things that don’t involve too much bending.

squeakyheart · 29/01/2023 13:46

Can I join? I have neglected my garden in recent years and this has caused a lot of issues. I keep sitting things in pots in the borders which have all sent roots through drainage holes so now they are stuck and likely to die if I try to sort them as the apple tree is huge.

I'm also thinking about getting rid of my greenhouse as I don't really use it like it should and a number of panes need replacing after a storm.

Really want to add more colour as a lot of it is now slightly over grown foliage. Resolution is to just do better!

PritiPatelsMaker · 29/01/2023 15:40

Ah thank you @daisychain01! I will definitely try that.

And of course you can join @squeakyheart Wink
