I was given a rose. What shall I do with it?

I got a lovely rose for my birthday two days ago. It is a bare root one. What do I do for it to survive?
I don't want to put it in the garden. I'd prefer it in the pop as we are moving soon. I'm worried it might not survive the cold. Please give me some advice. My gardening experience is a total zero.

It will definitely survive the cold.

Get a nice big pot and some compost and tuck it in for the winter.

Go on the David Austin website if you need instructions, think they have some videos to show you what to do too.

We were given one a couple of weeks ago potted up. It's staying on the kitchen windowsill for the time being with this cold weather. I just push a finger in to check if the compost has dried out and add a little tepid water if it has

Oh kitchen window seal is a good idea! It is bloody cold in the kitchen but not a minus thank God. So it won't get overheated. It is this one

If it is an outdoor bare-rooted one, it needs to be outdoors. Plant it fairly deeply in a pot of compost without disturbing the roots, and stand it by the house wall, or since it has no leaves on at the moment and doesn't need light, in a garage or shed.

The only sort to keep on a cool windowsill indoors would be the little potted ones you get as houseplants.

You will kill it by keeping it indoors, unless it is a specifically-bred indoor one. Even if it is, tepid water isn't a good idea - it shouldn't be above room temperature, and ideally a good bit below.

It does need to go outside, it will be fine. David Austin site has plenty of info on what size pot and what soil. You'd be best of with a plastic pot if you are going to be moving it as they do need quite large containers.

It's hardy so no problem with outside in a pot in a sunny sheltered spot (sheltered because you don't want the wind to blow it over!). Zoo poo or horse poo (if you know anyone with horses) mixed into a peat free compost and it will be a very happy plant! Roses have a long tap root, so height rather than breath of pot is important. When you plant it out go for a sunny spot against a wall, and it will be glorious (ideally close to where you have garden chairs so you get the full scent benefit!)

Zoo poo or horse poo (if you know anyone with horses) mixed into a peat free compost A bit of a waste at this time of year as the plant won’t be using the extra nutrient and it’ll just get leached away by winter rain. It’s not staying in the pot long, peat free compost on its own will be fine

I’ve heeled my new roses in, I will move them when the weather improves to their permanent spots. I just dig a 9” deep hole, lay them at a 45°angle and fill the hole in. They’re as tough as old boots!

Lemonademoney · 18/04/2023 19:40

It’ll be fine in a pot. Just feed it regularly. I Chuck a banana peel in when I pot a rose as I saw Charlie Dimmock do it once 🤷🏼‍♀️ seems to work as I have a few dotted round the patio on pots that are all coming along beautifully

Yellowdays · 20/04/2023 09:27

Just plant it outside. They don't mind cold but they do like space for their roots.
