Pansies

ChiefPearlClutcher · 22/11/2022 08:56

why don’t you mix pansies and primula? Pop daffs and/or narcissus and /or crocus under them

Thank you @ChiefPearlClutcher

Yes violas or winter pansies

Pansies have always been a complete failure in my experience, they just sulk all winter and look increasingly ragged and don’t really flower (and it’s not because I don’t deadhead them). If anyone has a magic touch with pansies please share your tips.

I had great success last year with Bellis and Cyclamen planted on top of muscari and tulips. This year I have added a primula to each pot.

Violas for me, I have seven pots in the front filled with them and they are full of flowers. I’ll replace with primulas in spring once they start going over.

Cyclamen – you just need to be careful with the watering so they don't rot. Best to water from underneath. They also keep over summer, and then flower again the following winter, so they are good value.

Have a smell of the ones that are on sale, because some (usually the white or white trimmed with pink) are scented, but not all. I have a pot by the front door and the scent when I arrive home from work is gorgeous.

I have cyclamen in a north facing window box and they haven't died (they have buds etc) but they are wilted.

What can have caused this?

What can have caused this?

One of three things:

  1. Too dry, they need some water
  2. Too wet and they will rot/die soon if not dealt with. Cyclamen only wilt from being too dry when they really really need water and will perk up in an hour or two, so if they feel at all moist, don’t water them but repot into drier soil and they may survive. Make sure that the top of the corms are sitting above the soil level - you should be able to see where the leaf and flower stems emerge from the corm when planted.
  3. Overnight frost will cause them to wilt first thing in the morning and they will perk up when the temperature goes up later in the day.

One of three things: And a forth thing - vine weevil grubs have severed the roots from the corm
