We use them and a robotic lawnmower, and our lawn was looking great until it started being destroyed by a nocturnal visitor (for which see my other thread in gardening).

It's money for old rope - they whizz round in about 5 mins when doing the normal treatments (aeration and scarification takes a lot longer), but I do all the rest of the gardening. I choose to outsource the lawn to Green Thumb and the robot so I can spend my time on all the other stuff.

Being a fully paid up member of pedants corner, I couldn't use this company as we use the phrase 'Green Fingers' in the UK. Unless you are in the US in which case ignore me.

I was wondering about this too but do they do anything about poor soil? My north facing front garden is on clay and despite having it returfed three years ago, plus scarifying and spiking, adding compost and sand mix then overseeding bare patches, I'm still getting moss. It seems so much hard work!

We did for a while but I can't say it was miraculous. They turned up for 10 mins once per quarter from memory.

We cancelled it and husband regularly sprays the lawn with Miracle grow which seems to do the same thing TBH.

Yes, I use them, in fact due to have the autumn/winter treatment next week. It’s true the operative doesn’t take long to do the treatment, but it has made a big difference to my lawn, which gets very mossy in wet years, and really helps with lawn weeds.

We have similar service - Greensleeves- my lawn was the worst in the street 20 yrs ago - full of dandelions, looking rubbish basically. Now one of the best. Definitely worth it x

Yes. We used them for about 10 years and were really pleased with them

But then the company got taken over and it was just not the same. They didn't book in the aeration and scarification we needed, they got sloppy, didn't turn up etc

If I were you I'd talk to local companies, many do this type of service now. Just compare some

I stopped using them because they kept turning up for lawn treatments according to their calendar, without any regard to the appropriate time of year to be doing something, the condition of the lawn or the weather. I've got much better results following the advice on www.lawnsmith.co.uk/.

Treatments I do myself. These are mostly a question of buying the right stuff and scattering or watering it in once or twice a year, so entirely manageable if you have a smallish lawn and good advice. I do have someone in to do mowing and edging as this is heavier work and time consuming. Finally I bought an electric lawn raker for less than £100 which is really easy and surprisingly satisfying to use, a couple of good rakings a year makes a massive difference. You can rake by hand but it's very hard work for less effective results.

Agree with Roussette. We used to and it started well, but we gave up. They're a franchise and it depends a lot on whether you get a good person in your area, I think. We had a really good chap for a while but he stopped coming and the new person was rather unreliable. The office were impossible to get hold of if you rang their number to find out what they hadn’t appeared - nobody ever answered. If you missed a treatment they just insisted that was it, they couldn’t reschedule. Plus, our lawn wasn’t getting any better….

(Also, as a minor point, our neighbours also used them and we got irritated - perhaps irrationally - that they never used their common sense to combine the two visits to cut down on sending out their van on two separate trips on different days. It just seemed silly and wasteful)

They are a franchise so your experience will vary depending on who’s delivering the service. Ours were brilliant - did an excellent job and the guys were always very polite and punctual.

I've not gone down the Green Thumb route myself, but a mate of mine did and found it a bit hit and miss. They seemed to stick too strictly to their own timetable rather than considering what the lawn actually needed or how the weather was playing out. I was also considering giving them a try but it's got me convinced that a more personalised touch is the way to go with our unpredictable British weather.
I've started looking after my own lawn, focusing on choosing the right stuff for it. It's actually been quite manageable, even with a moderate-sized lawn. I get someone else to do the heavy lifting with the mowing and edging – frees up my weekend a bit. I've had great results with this brand:www.relentlessgardener.co.uk/product-category/lawn-feed/. I was unsure of what to get at first but gave them a call and they were happy to help and gave me some great advice. It also works out cheaper and isn't too much hassle once you've found the right products. Hope this helps!
