My Wild Food Foraging book arrived on Friday!
We went to our local NT garden yesterday which is normally pleasantly dull, but its like a 4th dimension has just opened up and I'm seeing stuff everywhere!

Tell me what wild food you've found!

Obviously, it goes without saying, do your own research and don't eat anything you're not 100% sure of the ID.

I think its just another hawthorn. The leaf shape doesn't seem right for a service tree. They look either like a rowan, which is related, or like a maple gone wrong!
This looks more like a lime after a fight with some pinking shears!

I've ID'd the sickener brittlegill, and some honeyfungus (going in tomorrows fry up!), but I'm a bit stumped by this one. It looks rather distinctive. Any ideas?

The rosehip syrup is in the fridge waiting to be bottled, and the rosehip and apple jelly is just straining now. I can't wait to fill my shelves with seasonal jewels!

@SarahAndQuack which Rowan varieties are better or is it rowussian roulette?!?
Do you use rose geranium for you jelly? I want to grow some next year. They smell so lovely and can be used in so many ways! I recently bought Stephanie Hafferty's Creative Kitchen book which uses them quite a bit.

Research before you use scented leaved Pelargonium (geranium). I read somewhere that lemon/rose were ok but rose/lemon were poisonous. Can’t be absolutely sure which way round it was

@CuriousEats which books do you use to id fungi?

CuriousEats · 30/10/2022 10:10

@MereDintofPandiculation I've got the Wild Food Uk Foraging book (and their website is great too) and Geoff Danns Edible Mushrooms book. His pictures aren't as good as Wild Food as there's only 1 of each variety but the descriptions are top notch. Wild Food have multiple pictures of each, in different stages and locations, and with good lighting.
Can you recommend me some more?

Are you sure? They can be toxic to animals, but I've always understood they are not poisonous to humans. Geraniol can cause a bit of skin irritation if you are prone to it, but that'd be unlikely if used as a flavouring.

I think for fungi Id be wanting a general id book too. I like to check the non edible fungi to make sure there’s none that can be confused with the one in my hand.

Grin Well, I did my research before making jelly with them in, but I was trying to disagree without being rude!

I've been googling and can't find any mention of it being toxic to humans. Pets, yes. 🤔
