Big Indoor plant

I would like to have a big/tall/impressive indoor plant. I always buy little plants and they’re all a bit blah. I’d like splash out (up to £200ish) on one big showstopper. Ideally not a temperamental showstopper that dies easily. Any ideas pls? I can give it a corner with light, but no direct sunshine.

I've got a couple of Kentia palms for this. They're pretty good; mine are nearish north facing windows, but very large ones, so they get lots of light but no direct sun if that makes sense. They're both well over six feet tall but I bought them that size so I can't take any credit for their height!

You could also look at aspidistra, ficus elastica (rubber plant) or monstera deliciosa. All are big, reasonably hardy (monstera perhaps slightly less so but it's not an orchid or anything) and will cope without direct sun.

If you're spending £200, I would also get a humidity meter (£10) before you buy the plant. That will help you choose.

I've got a cheese plant ( monstera deliciosa) and I love it. Queen I got it it was just 4 leaves and with a thorough soaking every 10-14 days and then leaving it to totally dry out, and spraying the leaves daily, I've got an extra leaf every month. I'd give my left leg for a variegated cheese plant. Is my Dream house plant but I just can't afford it.

I have a rubber plant and a yukka. I love them both.

If your splashing out, I want to recommend Patch. Their plants are beautiful and healthy and resilient (all of mine are doing great despite my not so green fingers) and they come with advice on how to care for them, and a lifelong “plant doctor” service where you can get advice on what to change if your plant is not thriving.

It's bonkers how much they go for, isn't it? I'm not sure I don't prefer the plain green ones, personally.

I like aglaonema for leaf colour variation. Some of those are really pretty.

Thanks, lots of ideas. I think I’ll get a humidity meter before I take the plunge. I like everything on the Patch Plant website. Particularly appreciating the Unkillables section 😂

Another vote for a Kentia palm - they make a big impression but note they have quite a big footprint if you take into account the spread. I've got a six foot one on a little stool (if it's on the ground the leaves get in the way!). They don't need as much humidity as other palms but do be careful about watering - I lost a few leaves through underwatering.

I buy most of my plants from Patch. They are always high quality.

ramonaquimby · 15/08/2023 09:03

Try ikea? I bought a big peace Lily there a few years ago and it’s thriving in a north facing room. Wasn’t hugely expensive either

Merapi · 15/08/2023 22:18

Ikea. Reasonably-priced and you can actually see what you are getting in the flesh rather than relying on an online supplier. They do a lot of big pots as well.

The thread is from last October, looks like it got bumped by a troll, but might be nice to know if the OP found a good big plant.
My biggest indoor plant is a schefflera (umbrella plant) - they can be good if you want something reasonably priced that will grow larger. My DM didn't do houseplants but was given one which eventually reached the ceiling in an Edwardian house, near a north facing window with very little light. Mine has branched so may not get that tall.

BigBundleOfFluff · 17/08/2023 18:33

Another vote for an umbrella plant. They are cheap and start off small but keep growing and growing and growing.
Attached is a cutting of a cutting of a cutting from a cheapy umbrella tree from a supermarket. Chop off the growing top and propagate for your existing plant to get bushier and you also get a new plant.
If you look closely at the photo you will see some white tape. That's where I dropped this one a few months ago and it snapped. I taped it up with micro pore and it just keeps growing.
Just don't move them around - I did that once and every single leaf fell off my 8footer.

I was looking for a new feature houseplant ad I'm in the middle of redecorating and moving the living room around. Home bargains have some great big statement plants in at the moment. I got this gorgeous 3ft tall Alocasia for £8 yesterday. They also had giant calithea, rubber plants etc . Definitely thinking of going back to get another one at that price!
