What could I do here ?

This is the view from my window. I want to plant something tall and fast growing in front of the fence next to the brown shed, to block out the taller, lighter coloured shed on the other side.
it gets sun for only part of the day there. I had sweet peas growing up the fence this year which did well but I’m new to gardening so don’t want to just buy something Willy Nilly.
am I too late to plant for this year now ? Better waiting until spring ?
thanks.

Id put a silver birch there, but you may not want a tree

Snowberry3 · 03/10/2022 11:16

You can buy trees with eg 9 ft of growth. Although the ones I bought have not done well (crataegeus (hawthorn) but it could be due to some extremes of weather in the last few years.
If you bring the plant or tree forward it will block things sooner but you would have to mow round it.
Rowan, amelanchier, Field Maple. All are deciduous.

I think I’d be ok with a tree, it’s not too close to the house I think. Is deciduous better ?

Can I plant now or should I wait ?

perfect time of year for planting trees. Water in well and during the first year. Read up on staking them too. www.rhs.org.uk/advice/how-to-plant-a-tree

www.rhs.org.uk/plants/types/trees/smaller-gardens

I'd go decidous as I think you get more value from them in a small garden - flowers, berries, leaves changing colour.

Then I'd plant an evergreen climber on a trellis on the panel behind it.

How tall is that fence, and is it yours? You can go to 2m high with a fence, or if you build a gazebo, pergola or shed it is an 'outbuilding' and you could go to 2.5m high.

For planting I have an evergreen Jasmine which has grown a good foot higher than the fence it has grown up which might be enough for you (mine is on a west facing fence). I'm thinking about buying a pleached hornbean tree to block out a neighbour that likes to stare. Hornbeam trees hold onto their brown leaves in the winter so you still get screening.

Thanks for the links @BarrelOfOtters
@Rollercoaster1920 the fence is ours. The people who lived here before were elderly and couldn’t manage a big garden so they put a fence and a gate half way up and just used the first half. Dh has built himself a man cave on the other side of the fence as the small shed couldn’t fit all his stuff (crap) in it . He assured me it wouldn’t be too tall 🙄 I didn’t really want the garden full of sheds / buildings and I want to block it out now. The fence is probably about 6ft.

Ah, you want to soften the impact of your husband's shed! I assumed it was a neighbour's structure.
You could grow climbers up the outside of his shed then, and remove the fence panel to get a slightly bigger garden.

Elasticatedwaist · 03/10/2022 19:36

Removing the fence has been a consideration, dh doesn’t seem keen though. He thinks the concrete holding it on will be a pig to get out. We’ve moved into a house needing a lot of work so he probably just can’t stomach any more on his to do list lol. He thinks it’s all fine as it is .. I don’t !

I second an evergreen jasmine . Trachelospermum Jasminoides it's called , lovely shiny leaves and the flowers though small last alll summer long and smell divine. If you still fancy a tree I'd vote for a Rowan. Beautiful in Spring and Autumn and berries in winter too .

bluefootedboobie · 03/10/2022 21:29

I was going to say evergreen jasmine!

Maggiethecat · 03/10/2022 22:43

can I ask - I’ve planted a star jasmine hoping to cover a 3-4 meters of fence but wonder if I need 2?

steppemum · 03/10/2022 22:48

That fence would take a climbing plant really well.

CatherinedeBourgh · 08/10/2022 14:39

I would put a climber like a boston ivy or virginia creeper on the fence, and a small tree in front.

It grows pretty fast. If you train it properly I'd expect one to easily cover that small a space.

Going to the garden centre tomorrow so I shall have a look for jasmine for the fence I think and then see what trees they have for in front .
