Winter window boxes - any advice ?

I have had geraniums all over the summer but they are looking a bit peaky now . I do not have a front garden so just a couple of window boxes over the railings - NW facing - gets late afternoon sun ( when we have sun )

Can anyone give me a decent bit of advice for something which would last over the winter ? I have Ivy and that troops on. I think my window boxes are too small for box. I tried cyclamen but I think wind and rain were not their favourite thing. Maybe I just try that again.

Any suggestions gratefully accepted. I have googled but many plants seem to be either too big or more if one wanted vegetables etc .

Any suggestions I would love

Basilisk

I know it’s not in the spirit of the board but over winter could you pad them out a little with some artificial flowers. Keep your evergreens but if your florals are struggling then it’s an option. Evergreen direct have done decent ones.

@Dannexe - I will take any suggestions going. 😀 I'll look up Evergreen Direct. Near me I do see some with artificial flowers but I don't know whether it is the conditions or whatever but they do look a bit rubbish very quickly. But happy to hear any suggestions. Thank you for answering - appreciate it.

Winter flowering pansies are always a good bet.

I'm looking at winter flowering violas for mine. Plus spring bulbs layered below.

Winter flowering heathers, with tiny spring bulbs (eg miniature daffs) to push up through them. I used to have cyclamen too, but the small hardy cyclamen, C hederifolium for autumn and C coum for Dec onwards

Bulbs underneath, some hardy ferns and maybe a tiny green shrub on top?

Winter flowering pansies are always a good bet.

Just what I was going to suggest, beautiful, bright, cheerful colours that last all winter.

Thank you Thank you all - I am going to try winter flowering pansies and ( serendipity ) have noticed a woman at the end of the road has put some in her window boxes, but I like the idea of heather and a few little bulbs. ( Memo to self - remember how small your window boxes are. )

Many thanks to you all - even if not mentioned by name - v. helpful

I’ve got ivy, winter heathers, ophiopogan, and sprigs of holly with berries artfully inserted in places, with fir cones decorations too.
