Geraniums- what do you do with yours after flowering?

Potted some bedding variety this year in a number of pots and they seem almost done flowering.

wondering if they’re likely to return next year and if I should put them all together in one big pot and free up other pots for winter flowering plants or bulbs.

if unlikely to get good flowers next year I’ll just put them in the compost heap.

I have a few come back the next year, especially if in a very sheltered spot. They seem to die right down so a nice surprise to see them come up. You can take cuttings of any you particularly like - they are very easy to keep alive eg on a window sill.

Ours have been going for years. Cut them back put in greenhouse or a sheltered spot to avoid frost. We've lost a few over the years but the last couple of winter have been very mild

I take it we’re talking about Pelargoniums not Geraniums (although they’re related, and Pelargoniums used to be colloquially referred to as geraniums until “hardy geraniums” ie actual Geraniums became popular?

Pelargoniums go on for years and years, no reason to compost. You can either keep the plant, or start some cuttings which will take up less space. They need to be frost free.

Confused by the naming too but think this is a pelargonium (commonly called geranium).

@Maggiethecat Yes, that’s a Pelargonium. Good healthy plant, definitely not for the compost heap!

mine spend the winter (actually, all year) in a probably frost free porch/conservatory, and flower off and on all winter. Cheers the place up.
