Can anyone advise about these trees / bushes?

I have a birch on the left and an eucalyptus on the right that will be getting pruned soon and then two shrubs in the middle (no idea what they are) that are getting pretty big and fighting for space. Should I have one of them removed (if so which one) or remove both and plant something new in the centre?

I wouldn't remove any. They look as though they were planted to create a screen, to provide privacy and they are now doing that. Is it a front garden?

I'd need a close up of the others to identify them.

nothing really needs pruning or moving unless you want to change the shape or force flowering. that said both your birch and your eucalyptus will need regular trimming to keep the shape/prevent it growing into a massive tree respectively. Do you want to change how the middle looks eg have some lower shrubs with skirts down to the ground? If you're happy with how it looks I'd not mess with it.

I’d consider either removing the bush or adding another on the other side to balance it out a bit. If you don’t need the privacy, I also think just the two statement trees and no shrubs would work nicely too.

It's a front garden but the fence is approx 6ft so we don't really need any additional privacy. Both trees are pruned annually so if we do decide to remove either of the bushes, we'll do it at the same time. The front garden is west facing so we've recently shaped the grass / cut away all the moss as it was getting no light. I do wonder whether we should just remove them both then plant some low bushes / plants in the space next year.

Those shrubs and trees will be filtering noise and pollution from the road. If they are cutting out too much light, then cut back or remove, but bear that in mind. Close up photos might help to identify. Altho just green now, most shrubs have flowers at some point. They may be glorious.

Thanks for all the advice. Our tree surgeon has a cancellation tomorrow so he's fitting us in. We'll have a chat to him but I think we'll get them both removed and then look to plant a couple of low level shrubs next year to replace them. In 16 years they've never flowered (just drop berries everywhere) and we live on a very quiet, 10mph road so it shouldn't have an adverse effect on noise or pollution.

They are both huge trees if allowed to grow. I'd remove them - looks like the birch has already been cut back.

What about smaller tree like amelanchier - shrubs such as weigela, deutzia, kolkwitzia, hydrangea for a bit of colour through the summer.

There's something you can do with trees called crown lifting, which is to remove lower branches. It then lets in more light underneath and you can grow things under them easier.

You can also remove the lower branches of shrubs to tidy them up.

Eucalyptus grow very large very quickly. Ask your tree surgeon for advice. We’ve removed two that rocketed over lockdown. They can be lopped quite a lot and grow new branches.

In 16 years they've never flowered (just drop berries everywhere) That’s a botanical impossibility. If they have berries, the berries must have been preceded by flowers.
