So is pressure washing by a company illegal during a hosepipe ban?

I wanted to get my 'patio' done - actually the concrete strip around the house, embedded with half a century of grime but conceded to a local firm who provides this service that the hosepipe ban comes into force so it might not be on. Fella assured me that it's exempt as they're a company.
Is this true? It seems to make little sense that it's illegal for an individual to clean their own patio with their own pressure washer but not for a company to do this though I suppose life - or money in this case - must go on. Reminds me a bit of lockdown rules.
One website advice says that cleaning a patio is okay for a company but not walls or windows. Not sure why there is this distinction.
I am leaving off on this job for a bit anyway but does it mean that if a company says, hey, yeah, I'll do the job, it's legal, said customer could later be hit with a £1000 fine?!

Companies can use pressure washers as otherwise they risk going out of business.

Surtsey · 07/09/2022 14:28

Commercial use of hosepipes is okay apparently.

blacksax · 07/09/2022 14:29

There's a drought. Why do you want this work carried out now, can't you wait? It's not exactly necessary, is it?

deplorabelle · 08/09/2022 08:13

Commercial businesses are allowed to continue but if further drought restrictions are needed they would then have to close. Given that it's people's livelihoods I can see why they aren't included in the first tier of water saving measures.

You could try going at your concrete with a bucket of water and a stiff broom?

carefullycourageous · 08/09/2022 08:15

Obviously livelihoods are protected where possible.

Your patio doesn't need cleaning now.

Patio Magic (cleaning product) really works.

What a strange post. Just hold on until next spring.

One website advice says that cleaning a patio is okay for a company but not walls or windows. Not sure why there is this distinction. Window cleaners can still work AFAIK. But patios get walked on so can be a slip hazard if mossy so in e.g. hospitals they are higher priority than windows.

Why are you getting so worked up , would you rather.the went out of business? , if he assured you it was fine then it's fine.
Do you need your patio done right now ?
Why did you look it up if.youre that bothered about legalisties and the hosepipe ban ?

Peridot1 · 08/09/2022 08:25

Crikey. Some of the responses.

OP said she was holding off. She is not getting it done just now.

OP doesn’t sound ‘worked up’.

She was asking a question!

I have wondered the same about car washing places OP. We didn’t have a hose pipe ban but I did wonder of the car wash places would have to close.

SoupDragon · 08/09/2022 08:29

There does seem to have been a failure of basic reading comprehension going by some (most!) of the replies.

it was clearly just an idle question - I'd wondered too as I've seen companies jet washing driveways.
