Best climber between star jasmine (4 meters minimum)

Got two star jasmine on a trellis with a couple of meters in between.

Trying to decide what climber to put in between. Ideally purple/violet/red flowers (not yellow) and needs to get over 4 meters (Ideally 6 meters) to be visible at back of border.

Looked at clematis Jackmani but too small. Already have generous gardener roses but looking for a deeper colour - most climbing roses of that height seem to be pale colours.

Looked at Clematis Jackmanii but not quite tall enough.

Any recommendations? It's against a wall and then galvanised wire trellis higher up. Gets sun until 2pm, then shade.

Clematis alpina? Mine’s certainly way above my head (as in, I'm not sure whether it’s three times or 4 times my height). Clematis “Etoile Violette” (a viticella) which already at the top of an old lilac (4m) and wanting to go higher. The alpinas are earlyflowers, the viticellas July -August

Love the Etoile Viollette especially.

I did put a 'sweet summer loving' clematis in this position last year which should look very similar to the Etoile Violete but it looks like a weed. I think the slugs got it.

Also, if i do get an Etoile Viollette would you plant it now or next spring?

No. The obvious difference in photos is that the petals are a different shape, narrow and oblong rather than oval. This is because “Sweet Summer Love” is in the Clematis flammula group, therefore it has much smaller flowers than Etoile Violette, which is a variety of C viticella.

I have problems with slugs, so when I introduce a new Clematis I grow it in the slug free environment of my greenhouse for a year till it has about 1.5m of more woody stem. Slugs will climb higher than that, but not in such quantity. It would also give the Clematis more of a head start behind the tall plants in your border.

Great. Thanks very much!😊

One more related question. Any winter flowering climbers that get to 4meters or more (Any colour). Looked at winter Jasmine or winter Clematis but they are put to 2.5 m seemingly.

Looking at the two sweet summer loving clematis today. One has no leaves at all (is it dead) the other has a few leaves but also still only 50 cms after one year.

What would you do with them. Back of a border so they needed to get higher to get the sun.

Shoot on the left looks dead, but it may re-shoot from the base. Clematis are used to having to climb out of the shade, it’s why they’re climbers. They might be a bit dry, soil at wall bases tends to be dry

Winter flowering jasmine - mine is 3m, fastened up to wires, but higher would be a push. Clematis armandii will go higher.

Thanks again!

Solanum Glasnevin (potato vine) has purple flowers and grows super fast up to 6m. Mine has been putting on about 50cm a month this summer. It also has a really long flowering season.

weaselwords · 06/09/2022 08:02

I was going to say potato vine too. Ours has grown well this year and flowered and flowered.

Solanum Glasnevin (potato vine) looks very nice and ideal height. I need a bigger border! It is quite windy at the back of my border which is less of a problem for deciduous plans but i see this is evergreen or semi evergreen which is nice too but wonder whether it would hold up to wind?

I'm coastal and windy but it seems pretty robust. I have put a few bits of wire along the fence for it to hold onto but it really doesn't seem to mind the weather so far.
