Some sort of dead nettle. Might be a weed, might have pretty flowers, I'm not knowledgeable enough to tell.

The other 2 are, I think some sort of Geum. Again, may be or may not be a weed depending on the flowers! They're the ones that have those little balls of seeds with a hook on each one - we used to put them down each other's backs as kids. If that helps!

Thank you 😁

Yep, agree. Middle one is Lamium, aka dead nettle. Your variegated one is pretty and will flower, but it spreads and some people would regard it as a weed and would grub it up. The other two look to me like wood avens or Herb Bennett, a kind of wild geum. I have this and it infests everywhere. It’s the curse of my life as much of my time in the garden is spent painstakingly winkling it out 😱

Lolreally · 28/08/2022 19:27

I was asking for my tortoise alfie to see if it was safe for him 😁 the dead nettle is the geum is safe but not too much.
The previous owners just planted mad invasive plants everywhere so I understand the constant grubbing up of plants.

@Lolreally I have a tortoise too 😊 Sounds as though you know all about The Tortoise Table? Yes, Lamium is fine but mine isn’t interested in it, annoyingly!

Lolreally · 28/08/2022 22:16

@Halsall I have only had him a couple of weeks (hes and adult) the tortoise table is my bible. I must admit I love having him so much he is such a character but they are not easy pets. But so worth it 😍

@Lolreally They really are characters, aren’t they, though most people would be surprised at that! We’ve had ours in the family for 50+ years and he’s still going strong. His favourite food is campanula and he’s extremely partial to the occasional strawberry as a treat 😂

Jux · 29/08/2022 16:19

Pics! I have wanted tortoise for years but they're so expensive, we can't afford one. I remember my childhood tortoise, and then I once found a runaway tortoise on a railway siding, who we took to a friend with a massive massive garden. I wish I'd kept him!

Halsall · 29/08/2022 16:52

For @Jux 😊

@Jux the tortoise protection group rehome free of charge have a look at thre Facebook group. The rehoming criteria is quite stringent as tortoises are not an easy pet, but maybe worth a look.

All weeds to me!

You’re missing out on a lot of pleasure

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 04/09/2022 08:53

The wood avens is a terrible stifling weed. The lamium is fine.

Jux · 12/10/2022 23:35

Thank you Halsall! Lovely pics.

Sorry I hadn't seen you' d put those here - I've actually been confined to bed, nearly hospitalised - for the last week.

Those pics have cheered me up xx

The wood avens is a UK native. The Lamium is causing concern as an invasive plant.

MereDintofPandiculation · 13/10/2022 09:22

The one in the background with whorled leaves is woodruff (Galium odoratum). In the third picture, the shoot that looks vaguely like mint could be bugle (Ajuga reptens). The grass like thing is a seedling sedge, it looks like Carex pendula. Altogether a typical ensemble of woodland edge plants.

SalviaOfficinalis · 13/10/2022 09:22

Dead nettles are lovely. Especially good if you have a dark/dry corner of the garden where nothing else will grow. I’ve planted some deliberately. And they’re quite easy to pull up if they spread more than you want.

Halsall · 13/10/2022 15:01

Hope you’re feeling better now, @Jux. Tortoise sends a hello! He’s still eating for England despite supposedly heading for hibernation soon….

Jux · 13/10/2022 18:15

Thank you, woke up yesterdat moring and I KNEW I was better! All fine now.

He's so sweet. I do love tortoises xxxx to him!
