A year ago DS brought home a tiny succulent. it has now grown so tall it can’t support itself, but it has had babies - I suspect poor plant is simply exhausted!

Can I just lop the top off and see what happens to the bits below?

I had similar with one DD bought home from uni. I've now got 3 triffids. I propagated some cuttings and they've grown really well. It'll be fine! They are very hardy!

It’s an echevaria, they’re very hardy so if you chop the top off and plant the cutting, it should root. Likes dry and sunny conditions. Good luck!

Might have grown too tall due to not being close enough to light. You can report them as they are, but what I'd do is;

Cut the tops off at a node, let them callus over (do some individual leaves as well as you create a small stem), then plonk some into gritty compost, try some touching water to develop roots and wait to see what happens.

You'll end up with hundreds of the buggers lots of plants for cheap presents.

I had one. Now I've got about fifty. Just warning! 😀

We've got one, should I be afraid?

Fifty?

You amateur.

I'm not a hypocrite, really. hides 75 aloes and echeveria, 9 jade plants and we will never speak of the spider plant infestation of summer 2011 after the cat knocked Plant Zero off the windowsill

Anybody after a Monstera at all?

I think it’s a Graptopetalum rather than an Echeveria - they are closely related. Easy to propagate as already mentioned, just cut the tops off and rest on gritty compost until roots show, then pot up.

NorthFaceofthelaundrypile · 24/08/2022 20:44

When you say cut the top off, does that mean I can just cut off the top 7 or 8 cm?

Having compared Graptopetalum and Echeveria, I think @NanTheWiser is right.
just found a handy YouTube vid for cutting and propagating, so hopefully I’ll get lots of lovely babies! It’s such a pretty plant that I don’t mind being overrun by them!

Yeah, a clean chop will work just fine.

But do be careful what you wish for...
