Clover lawn?

Just as the title says, does anyone have a lawn with clover instead of grass (or any other ground covering?).

We have two patches of grass which are about 1.5 x 3m. The grass which has popped up is very patchy and long and I don't like it, the kids won't walk on it as it is, and I like the idea of having something which might be of more benefit to pollinators.

Has anyone done/heard of this?

Sorry to jump on your thread OP but if I started my own I would get a lot of ‘there was a thread on this the other day 🙄🙄’ so hope you don’t mind!! Wasn’t sure which way was the worst of 2 evils!

Anyway very interested in clover/moss lawns but DS is constantly playing football. Lawn is now hay after the summer. Can anyone recommend a hardy/football-tolerant option? I love the wildlife in our garden (resident hedgehog and frog visitor 😍)

We have an accidental clover lawn! It's not completely clover, but enough that there's more clover than grass. It stays green for longer than just grass, is full of bees and doesn't grow too fast. I do still cut it, but a high normal cut keeps the majority of the flowers. Down side is you do have to either wear shoes or watch where you're walking in case of bees!

We also have a meadow area where we grow the taller form of clover. Both are liked by the bees, but they seem to prefer the clover lawn to the meadowy bit.

I have a couple of football players and the clover does fine - better than the grass!

These guys do a native wildflower lawn mix (eithercwith grass or without) which can be mowed to a 2 inch turf, so still very much usable as a lawn but better for wildlife and more drought tolerant. I'm in the process of creating mine, but it does take an initial bit of effort as you have to kill or scarify most of the grass first. If you just chuck wildflower seeds onto grass the grass will out compete them.

When we moved in here I wanted a chamomile lawn but dh wasn't happy with the care it seemed to require, so we put down ordinary turf in the end.

I now wiuld much prefer moss. I'd love that.

Clover lawns full of bees are lovely until you step on a bee and it stings you, or your toddler swipes one away from his face etc etc. If you want a tiny garden that attracts loads of action and does so all year round then I'd say don't focus on 'lawn' but think paths running through/past interesting places including a little pond or bog with lots of vegetation round and in it, a little tree or nice shrub so birds have somewhere to hide on their way to your bird feeders, some 'beds' of wildflowers, or beds of flowers that wildlife love (my lavender and persicaria are full of bees at the moment). Add in some early bulbs for the bees (crocus, grape hyacinth) and if you're building anything include a couple of bee bricks. Will the neighbours tolerate a hedgehog hole in your fences? And get yourself a trail camera so you can catch the night action.
