Autumn flowering plants

Hi.

my garden has peaked for the summer, everything has flowered and finished for the year already. Having had a massive garden clearing day I’m left with nothing but green.

are there any plants I could put in which will give some colour throughout the late summer / autumn?

I usually go with Calendula and nasturtiums. The orangey and brown tones fit nicely with the ripening fruits and autumn leaves.

Following OP as I have a similar-ish situation...
All I can think of is long flowering roses (have some of that).
Also snapdragon, though here (British isles) they're more green than flower as the weather is so wet and nice for them :)

Rudbeckias, persicaria, japanese anemones, sedums, agastache, crocosmia, penstemon, asters and heleniums... grasses coming into their own...
Lots of colours for autumn...lovely gentle time of the year...

Some great suggestions, thanks all.

'Sedums' as in sedum spectabile has been renamed Hylotelephium spectabile. Definitely worth getting as it's really easy to propagate.

Do you need a greenhouse or can I sow straight into the ground?

I meant worth buying a plant or two, I don't know if you can start them from seed. But from my original one I've got loads now, could have had more if I'd had the room.

"Sedums" come in all sizes too - I have the big 'classic' pink flowered ice plant, and also some lovely low-growing ones with very red leaves and dark purply flowers. And yes, easy to divide a clump and increase it over the years.

I was trying to think before, and couldn’t, what Ive got out at the moment: Soapwort, Lysimachia (purple leaves and yellow flowers,), this year’s Nicotiana seedlings, a late honeysuckle, Lythrum salicifolia, berry catchfly (an annual in tasteful purple and lime green), Fuchsia, late varieties of Clematis and Honeysuckle.

Dahlias, Salvias, Penstomens all flower right up to first frosts.

Rebecca75 · 19/08/2022 22:09

All my dahlias and salvias have died - despite heavy watering ☹️

Cosmos, dahlias, nasturtium, petunia, lobelia, fuchsias, verbena, Sylvia's, hyssop, oregano, begonias are all still blooming in my garden.

BlackbirdsSinging · 19/08/2022 22:16

Fushia, hydrangea, michaelemas daisy, Japanese anemone.

You didn’t water too much, did you?

If you get just one sedum plant, you can cut bits and stick them in a pot, and they'll become new plants. No need to put them in a propagator, greenhouse or anything, they are fine with being quite dry.

My favourite is sedum matrona (or should that now be hylotephium matrona? I can't keep up!). Slightly purplish leaves and a really nice, upright structure.
