Moving a climbing rose

Is it possible to move an established climbing rose?

The tree my Rose Iceberg is climbing round has to be removed next month, so I’d like to dig up the rose and put it against the fence.

Advice I’ve read so far varies as to whether or not it would survive.

Leave it as late in the season as you possibly can, that will give it the best chance. You'll need to prune the stems down to about 2 feet, and dig up as many roots as possible. Make sure the planting hole is ready for it, and replant so the stem emerges from ground level at the same height as before. Then keep watered for a few weeks and keep your fingers crossed. You will probably need to water it next year as well, to give it the best chance.

It might be worth adding some mycorrhizal fungi (such as Rootgrow) into the planting hole too.

We moved 4 established roses in the summer a few years ago and they all survived. When I Googled advice was to prune heavily before moving to reduce how much water they needed while establishing themselves again.

However, they needed lots of watering for the next few months - it was very obvious as they lost a lot of leaves and the remaining ones kept drooping. Based on all 4 roses surviving I think roses must be fairly robust to moving, I have had lower survival rates with other plants we've moved. We mulched with bark chippings to help reduce water loss from the soil. I can't remember if we had to water the following year. If you can wait until autumn I'd have thought it would be a lot better.

We’re waiting for a date from the tree surgeon to remove the tree but it will definitely be September.

But the rose has got to be planted in it’s new spot straight away? I was hoping to put it in a pot for a bit. Will have to re-think its new location.
