Does anyone know what this plant is? It has come up in a new border and it has grown quite big but can’t see anything similar anywhere else in our garden! Thank you!

Looks like a grass of some kind?

GirlInACountrySong · 28/07/2022 11:16

Freesia?

YanTanTetheraPetheraPimp · 28/07/2022 11:20

It might be pendulous sedge, in my opinion, if it is then I would yank it out - it’s very tenacious!

BlanketsBanned · 28/07/2022 11:27

Is it sweet vernal grass

Sunnysideup · 28/07/2022 11:28

It’s not sedge I don’t think.

Circleofshells · 28/07/2022 11:29

Unfortunately it looks like it could possibly be barnyard grass. It’s a highly invasive weed so it needs to be dealt with carefully, sooner rather than later. If you search online you’ll find a lot of discussion on it. Would recommend you get a plant ID app such as picture this to help confirm ID better.

Great thank you everyone! I’ll look up all of those suggested

Looks like a species of Millet (Pennisetum), grown as a crop for human/animal consumption, biomass production,, but also as an ornamental grass in gardens and by local authorities in park and town planting schemes. Also frequently found in bird food so yours is probably a 'volunteer' from a seed from one of these sources

IcakethereforeIam · 28/07/2022 13:57

Yeah, do you have any bird feeders?

Tams1234 · 28/07/2022 15:06

No bird feeders but we have a lot of pigeons! I have pulled it up now as don’t want it spreading

That’s a grass not a sedge, so not pendulous sedge. It looks like a millet, so probably originates from bird food.

Plant apps aren’t infallible, they can make quite huge mistakes as they’re operating without botanical knowledge. Any id given should be checked out thoroughly. They’re for giving suggested ids, not for checking out ids.

HasaDigaEebowai · 29/07/2022 09:42

I’d also go for millet.

it isn’t pendulous sedge, we have that absolutely everywhere

IcakethereforeIam · 29/07/2022 09:46

We get wheat and oats growing from the 'no grow' bird food and have had sunflowers popping up in strange places. I think it's the blue ties caching seed round the garden.
