I’m so sick of my poor plants being eaten to bits my Lilly’s have absolutely no chance of making it this summer now I put a cheap slug killer I bought from B&M and it’s not helped at all!!! Can anyone recommend a very good brand that works well?

More Lillies - they can’t eat them all

Or frogs/ toads - they eat them whole. Get yourself a mini pond nearby.

Or this.., www.nematodesdirect.co.uk/6-nemaslug

But honestly prevention is better than cure. The frogs are savages and a permanent solution so I would recommend that route over this,

Beer. Leave it in a dish by the plant, they climb in and drown. Or you can used crushed eggshells round the stem like a barrier.

Hedgehogs...

Most herbicides/pesticides/fungicides have less potency now as stronger chemicals are being banned due to their environmental impact.

Your best bet is actually going on a slug/snail hunt after dark with a torch, and physically removing them. It's not pleasant but plants can be destroyed totally, it's not always just cosmetic damage with a few leaf edges nibbled.

A pond is actually a very good idea if you can fit one in somewhere, biological control like encouraging other creatures higher up the food chain is best all round.

Also @PinkBump2022 watch out for Lily Beetle too, that does terrible damage to all members of the lily family. I've picked quite a few from my lilies this year as always. They tend to drop off if you disturb them so putting your hand underneath to catch them works. I crush them as I don't think birds are keen on eating them (it's probably the colour that puts them off).

If your lilies are in pots copper tape seems to have been working well to protect my dahlias.

I haven't seen a slug in my garden for ages, I'm assuming because I put mealworm/bird food in amongst the flowers which encourages the birds to come down? In the nicest way to pp, slugs can happily glide along a knife edge, I think the egg shell thing is a myth. Please stay well aware from pellets etc that kill other wildlife ❤️

Nemaslug.£15 for enough to treat 40m2. Repeat at 6 weekly intervals. As successive generations are removed, there will be fewer each time

MereDintofPandiculation · 24/07/2022 09:29

I agree with Noodle, check that you haven’t got lily beetle

Coastalcreeksider · 24/07/2022 09:33

I always grow my lilies in a tub, for the third year, I've had no slugs, snails or lily beetles and the lilies looked beautiful.

My friend grows her lilies in the garden and always has lily beetle problems with the plants.

A combination of nematodes, a small wildlife pond with frogs and a night time search with a torch has reduced my slug population hugely (although sadly not removed them completely).

Just as an aside I had the wildlife pond for a while before I realised it actually had to be filled with rainwater- as soon as I did that the frogs moved in immediately and they have made a surprising difference. I also use copper rings around the base of plants I know they have a taste for (in my garden its young foxgloves), along with a top dressing of seaweed fertiliser.
