Agapanthus advice please

I have many agapanthus, three are in big Long Tom pots. I have had these three for five years. They flowered brilliantly until last year when there were fewer blooms and this year there are just a few.
Too late for feeding this year? And what is best to use? Or is repotting the only option?

It's not to late to feed - but you won't get blooms this year, I don't think. But still very much worth feeding to keep the plant vigourous for next year.

I use a tomato feed once every couple of weeks throughout summer, finishing in Sept.

Whether to repot depends on the space and roots. Whilst you get more blooms on a plant which is squeezed in a little bit, no plant likes to be very, very pot bound so if yours is, then time to repot. Even if it's just taking them out, splitting and reducing the size and bit and putting bits back in again - plus free plants for somewhere else Grin

(Repotting once every 3-5 years sounds about right also, so it may just be "time")

Thank you! Is liquid seaweed ok? I use on my tomatoes.

yes its fine.....two other things about repotting agapanthus.....they will flower when potbound but its more that they don't mind than that they require it...the reason people thought that they needed to be potbound is that they have fleshy roots that are quite brittle and easily damaged when they are repotted...so people would repot them roughly, damage the roots which meant that they wouldn't flower for a year or two and think that therefore they needed to be potbound to flower. I find too that they are a bit weather dependent and flower less if they don't get a good baking.

Yup, agree that liquid seaweed is another good choice Grin

Also, whilst I'd wait for the curent heat wave to be done, it's getting to be a nice time to report. I did mine in about August last year and they have plenty of opening flowers on them this year so don't worry that you might not get flowers next year either.

you were obviously gentle with the roots

I wish I could say I was Blush

I emptied the pot into the lawn and cut through them with a spade. As I recall it took a few whacks and me standing on the spade to get all the way through.

But it's possible my regular feed routine balanced out all the root damage Smile
